This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in our Johnston County Maintenance Unit.
+ Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads in Johnston County.
+ In this position you will be setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools.
+ You will operate various pieces of equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe.
+ This position you will monitor tasks performed by other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled nightwork.
+ You will be expected to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Working knowledge of standard road maintenance, and construction procedures.
+ Working knowledge of Work Zone safety and Workplace safety policies.
+ Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
+ Experience in one of the following: ditch maintenance or asphalt patching, pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal.
+ Experience in snow and ice removal operations
Additional Expectations:
Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employees must have the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency callback
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
