This position will report to the Assistant Division Traffic Engineer within the Division 10 area and is responsible for overseeing the Division blanket signal contract, reviewing plans related to the contract, and attending pre-construction meetings related to signals and timing. This position will be responsible for overseeing and inspecting signal and roadway lighting contracts as well as maintaining our communication equipment, timing isolated signals and conducting intersection evaluations. Will also assist higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, material sampling and testing, and construction traffic control. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
+ Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and produce engineering plans and specifications
+ Experience with NCDOT design guidelines and engineering software applications is essential
+ Knowledge of both maintenance and construction operations within NCDOT is preferred because this position will assist with various projects of broad scope
+ Skill in use of survey equipment and skill in the use of office equipment such as calculators, and personal computers
Additional Expectations:
Employee will serve as inspector for moderate to complex projects and must have the ability to perform mid to upper-level technical work in performing sampling, testing, and inspection duties to determine compliance with contract, plans, and specifications. Employee will be required to have a close visual acuity to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway, signal and lighting components. Applicant will be required to exercise appropriate decision making and judgment. Position requires ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with personnel such as DOT engineers and technicians, contractors, utility company representatives, and environmental agencies. Employee may be exposed to high traffic volumes. Safety toe shoes required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
