This posting represents two (2) Transportation Worker II positions located in the Alleghany County Maintenance unit. Position numbers 60021783 and 60021863 will be filled from this posting. You only need to apply once to be considered for both positions.
This post is for Positions 60021783 and 60021863 for a Transportation Worker II in the Alleghany County Maintenance unit. Work will consist ofa wide range of progressively responsible, maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes, but is not limited to, installation of traffic and erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes snow and ice removal, hurricane cleanup and other emergencies as they occur. Work includes the operation of various pieces of equipment that includes, but is not limited to asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, ditching machine, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. and emergency response, which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. May perform a variety of other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
+ Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
+ Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
+ Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
+ Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
Additional Expectations:
Safety shoes required. Must be able to operate State vehicle and assigned equipment effectively. Ability to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor.
Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Work may include lifting up to 50 lbs repeatedly. Employee must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, talking and hearing. Employee will be exposed to outside extreme environmental conditions such as ice, snow, dust, heat and cold, and work in extreme temperature conditions, and heavy equipment and highway traffic.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Necessary Special Requirements
