    The NCDOT Transportation Planning Division located in Raleigh, NC is seeking an entry level transportation engineer to work with planning organizations in the Coastal Planning area, and it is anticipated that this position would likely be assigned to work toward developing Comprehensive Transportation Plans (CTPs) as required by the North Carolina State Statue. The planning group has responsibility for providing transportation planning expertise and support for Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), Rural Planning Organizations (RPOs), and multiple counties and municipalities in the region; developing coordinated long range comprehensive transportation plans and administration of state and federal funds provided to local governments for transportation planning. Work includes the development of transportation plans that serve as a guide for policies and development, GIS spatial data analysis, and mapping including but not limited to forecasting, deficiency analysis, environmental and Title VI screening, and multimodal recommendations. One should be able to plan, schedule, and conduct GIS analysis, travel demand modeling, and engineering work as well as convey findings in oral and/or report form. One should be able to work with other team members, solving complex problems.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Management prefers applicants that demonstrate the following:

    + Experience, training, or coursework in any of the following: transportation planning, project development, traffic forecasting, environmental engineering, or traffic engineering.

    + Experience, training, or coursework in any of the following: data collection and evaluation, traffic trends, or data projections, application of capacity analysis

    + Experience, training, or coursework in computer applications and operations (Microsoft Office, GIS, TransCAD, etc.).

    + Experience communicating findings and recommendations to others.

    + Experience working on team or group projects.

    Additional Expectations:

    Applicant should have a basic knowledge of the technical aspects of transportation systems planning, travel demand modeling using TransCAD, ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro, capacity deficiency analysis, traffic forecasting, alternative modes of transportation, environmental constraints, and other project planning principles. Applicants must be able to work with a high degree of accuracy and have good technical writing and oral communication skills. Most work is done in Raleigh office with occasional evening or overnight meetings. This position requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be able to work and communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner.

     

    Applicants who have passed the FE exam, pursuing a PE, and/or have some coursework and/or experience in transportation planning are preferred.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
