    Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)

Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Sciences, Engineering, Neuroscience, Psychology or a closely related field and/or M.D. degree. Experience in brain imaging.

    Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with PET Imaging and External Grant Funding.

    Brief Description of Duties:

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health (https://renaissance.stonybrookmedicine.edu/psychiatry) of Stony Brook University (SBU) seeks to fill a Postdoctoral Associate position in positron emission tomography (PET) brain imaging in mood disorders and Alzheimer’s related dementias. The successful candidate will collaborate with clinicians, engineers, physicists, chemists and statisticians in the Center for Understanding Biology using Imaging Technology (CUBIT). CUBIT members have a strong track record of obtaining external funding from NIH and other institutions, as well as in guidance and career development of junior members.

SBU is committed to neuroimaging research. Our infrastructure now includes: an onsite cyclotron, a 100% research-dedicated PET/CT scanner, a 100% research dedicated PET scanner, a 50% research dedicated PET/MRI and two cGMP 11 C and 18 F radiopharmaceutical laboratories

The candidate will also have immediate access to brain PET data acquired from multiple universities, including Stony Brook. This includes large (>30 participants) datasets examining the glutamatergic system or inflammation in depression, as well as the cholinergic system in cognitive decline. These rich datasets will be used for the successful candidate’s publications and grant proposals, with guidance from expert PET researchers and statistical support (from the Biostatistical Consulting Core). In addition, the candidate will have access to numerous internal funding mechanisms to obtain funding for independent research initiatives. CUBIT’s goal is to train the postdoctoral research fellow for a successful, independent career in neuroimaging research.

With the above infrastructure, particular strengths of institution are in fully quantitative PET imaging. The SBU PET Core, directed by Dr. Ramin Parsey, consists of two units (A Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturing/Radiometabolite Laboratory and CUBIT). A focus of the PET Core is to advance widespread use of PET and PET/MRI technology. As such, it provides outreach, including talks to various departments regarding the facilities and support available. Training topics include: understanding the regulatory and practical aspects of new PET studies, available radiotracers for clinical/pre-clinical studies, setting up study protocols with Institutional Review Board (IRB), Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC) and FDA Investigational New Drug (IND) approval, as well as PET analysis and outcome measures.

Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree, and expertise in PET, demonstrated through publications, presentations and/or grant funding. Applicants with grant funding in a related brain imaging field will also be considered.

Stony Brook University offers highly competitive salaries and interaction with a growing, interdisciplinary community in an attractive campus environment. The School of Medicine is located in beautiful Suffolk County, on the North Shore of Long Island approximately 40 miles east of New York City. Interested candidates should submit an application including curriculum vitae.

    Duties:

    • Develop competitive proposals for internal and external funding.

    • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals including new data and analyses of previously collected data.

    • Present data at internal meetings, national and international conferences.

    • Work with the PI and other lab members as well as collaborators outside the institution.

    • Oversee ongoing PET studies.

    • Oversee PET analysis and synthesize/interpret results for internal and external presentation.

    • Correspond with the IRB and RDRC for existing and new PET studies.

    • Implement protocols for PET imaging and intervention studies in humans.

    • Other duties as assigned
