The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor in the Labor Division to personally represent and to supervise other attorneys in the representation of the City, City officials and/or employees, as applicable (a) in employment cases, including those alleging discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, filed with federal, state, and local agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Illinois Department of Human Rights, the Illinois Human Rights Commission, and the Chicago Commission on Human Relations; (b) in employee disciplinary and discharge proceedings before the City’s Police Board and Human Resources Board; and (c) in employee disciplinary proceedings before arbitrators. The extent to which the Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor will perform any of these functions will vary from time to time and depend in part upon Division staffing and needs. The Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor may also have responsibility regarding other matters, including but not limited to client counseling; interaction with other Law Department divisions, other City departments, and outside counsel; and Labor Division attorney and staff training, development, and evaluation. The Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor will be responsible for both supervising and handling all phases of assigned matters, including but not limited to personally conducting and participating in hearings. The Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor will work under the general supervision of the Deputy Corporation Counsel and the Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel, and as needed, the Chief Labor Negotiator, and/or the Assistant Chief Labor Negotiator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ideal candidates will possess:
+ a minimum of 5 years of experience conducting administrative hearings and/or arbitrations and/or litigation in court
+ Experience handling litigation or disciplinary matters involving the Chicago Police Department and/or other public sector employers
+ Experience handling employment discrimination, harassment, and retaliation charges and/or labor arbitrations
+ Superior research, writing, editing, and analytical skills
+ Exceptional communication and client counseling skills
+ The ability to work well with others
+ Demonstrated leadership and initiative
+ Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, monitor, and control workflow and deadlines
+ Demonstrated commitment to public service
Preference may be given to candidates possessing the following:
+ Experience handling cases before the City of Chicago Police Board
+ Experience handling cases before the City of Chicago Human Resources Board
+ Experience handling employment disciplinary cases before similar public sector boards, commissions, or agencies
Qualifications:
+ Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree
+ Admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligible for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705), good standing with your state Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission
