The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our team. This position is in the Construction Section of DOTD and serves as the assistant to the Lead Engineering Technician for the projects assigned and reports directly to the Engineer 7.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
The incumbent is required to have specialized knowledge of the use of: Computers, calculators, rulers and measuring tapes, levels, and a large number of test equipment. The Engineering Technician 4 position may serve as primary inspector for a phase or phases of construction in area or areas of specialization/certification or lead inspector on a small project; determines sample requirements for area(s) of expertise. The ET 4 verifies elevations/alignments of construction work. The ET 4 prepares work reports, estimate quantities, and/or calculations and is responsible for the inspection and/or gathering samples of construction materials on an assigned Unit 224 Construction Project(s). The ET 4 may perform routine inspection tasks, as well as checking construction work for progress on contract plans and specifications. The ET 4 completes all paperwork necessary for sampling and testing and prepares sampling plans. The ET 4 measures and performs more complicated computations and renders detailed sketches and prepares daily work diaries or field book entries. The ET 4 becomes familiar with Department procedures, policies, standards and specifications as relate to the processing of construction-related documents such as partial and final estimates, test reports, and materials audits (2059); assists higher-level technicians in a Project Engineer's office engaged in these tasks. The ET 4 gathers and compiles field information and reports related to the design of District construction projects for the Engineering Technician 7. This position includes training of Engineering Technician 1-3 as needed.
The incumbent is required to operate all equipment that is normal to an effective quality assurance/accounting function. He or she must be knowledgeable in the safe operation of passenger vehicles, as well as, other equipment operated by the Department and Contractors.
The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.
The incumbent must be self-motivated, imaginative, and able to perform duties with or without direct supervision. He or she should be knowledgeable enough to interpret and report unforeseen conditions as they may arise. He or she must be able to engage in professional technical communications and understand/follow chain-of-command processes.
This position also requires the incumbent interact with a variety of stakeholders and project the best image possible for the Department. He or she must hold sacred the public trust and be proactive in representing interests of the taxpayers of the State of Louisiana.
+ 75% Inspection/Area of Certification - Monitors construction signage for compliance with Departmental requirements. Inspects contractor construction procedures to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality assurance. Collects required samples and tests materials that are to be included in the project. Performs soil densification tests using nuclear density machine. Receives profile data and evaluates pavement surfaces to determine longitudinal surfac? acceptability. Takes all pertinent measurements including but not limited to length, width, and depth verification. Calculates quantities for project records. Compiles and summarizes monthly contractor payments for review. Gathers field information for alterations or changes to the project. Prepares and/or reviews project diaries. Assists in maintaining good public relations with individuals affected by the construction activities. Performs on-the-job training in the principle areas of certification. Monitors contractor compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity requirements. Writes haul tickets
+ 10% Office duties - Indexes, labels, and itemizes pay items in the project document records. Recapitulates project document records for final audit. Computes and validates project quantities. Obtains additional training as needed or required. Uses computer, engineering applications as required by Departmental policy.
+ 5% Design of projects - Collects field data including cross sections, draws field sketches, and calculates quantities related to Standard Departmental Design Practices.
+ 5% Associated Duties - Participates in activities that are necessary for the function of the (ET-4) Construction Office. Performs such duties as are required for the efficient operation of the Department and to protect the public interests.
+ 5% Special Duty - May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Career Progression:This position may be filled as an Engineering Technician 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Compensation: Salary depends on qualifications. The starting salary and premium pay for each level are as follows:
+ Engineering Technician 1 - The starting salary is $12.22/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
+ Engineering Technician 2 - Starting salary is $14.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
+ Engineering Technician 3 - Starting salary is $16.03/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
+ Engineering Technician 4 - Starting salary is $18.35/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
