The Nevada County Community Development Agency is looking for a dynamic, multifaceted Supervisor for our Environmental Health Department! The Supervisor will direct staff and work of multiple programs including but not limited to Hazardous Materials, Consumer Protection and Land Use. The Supervisor plays a vital role in focusing on improving regulatory practices and infrastructure while fostering a culture of service and collaboration shaping how the Environmental Health Department interacts with and supports the broader community. The Supervisor will also develop staff through mentorship, training, and performance management that will guide long-term strategies and ensure alignment with county goals and environmental health standards.
Typical duties include the following:
+ Coordinate and work closely with the REHS IV for the 3 programmatic Divisions: Consumer Protection, Hazardous Materials and Land Use.
+ Assess organizational needs, perform targeted research, and analyze relevant data to define strategic programmatic priorities across Divisions. Provide guidance and support to REHS IV staff in cultivating leadership competencies and advancing continuous process improvement initiatives.
+ Develop and review program policies/procedures specific to assigned area. Interpret and apply provisions of law, rules, and regulations related to program area.
+ Provide comprehensive supervision of assigned staff, including schedule review and approval, facilitation of training and professional development, performance evaluation, and oversight of work assignments. Responsibilities also encompass informal counseling on workplace matters, preparation of documentation and improvement plans for identified deficiencies, and recommendations for disciplinary action when appropriate.
+ Interview and make recommendations regarding filling of positions. Conduct safety and staff meetings with assigned staff.
+ Review and respond to correspondence and other forms of communication sent by a wide variety of individuals.
+ Deliver expert professional and technical consultation on advanced programmatic issues, actively contributing to the execution of highly complex, sensitive, or mission-critical projects within the designated program area.
+ Prepare comprehensive grant applications, budget documents, and related materials—including Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Requests for Qualifications (RFQs), and other program-specific content—for presentation to the Board, Board task forces, community organizations, interagency committees, and various meetings and conferences.
+ Coordinate organizational development initiatives aimed at strategically enhancing customer service delivery, with a targeted emphasis on connecting business owners to relevant tools, support systems, and resource networks.
+ Representing Nevada County with public outreach efforts related to the Environmental Health Department
Certification as an active Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) with the State of California is Required.

Education and Experience Required
+ Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency
+ Withat least30 semester units of basic biological, physical, or environmental science courses which must have included one or more laboratory courses in chemistry, physics, microbiology, biology, and one or more mathematics courses in college algebra or higher math.
+ Two (2) years of experience equivalent to an Environmental Health Specialist IV in the County of Nevada.
+ V alid certificate as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in the State of California

Retirement
