Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team is seeking a Director of Base Infrastructure. We are looking for a high-impact, strategic leader to oversee a global function that enables the timely delivery of physical cloud infrastructure across a diverse portfolio of geographies.
This role is critical to ensuring Microsoft’s cloud expansion powering everything from AI to enterprise collaboration—remains predictable, scalable, and efficient. CO+I is responsible for the full lifecycle of Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, spanning site selection, development, and operations. Our global footprint includes datacenters in 34 countries, supported by over 165,000 miles of fiber optic cable. These facilities form the backbone of Microsoft Azure and are central to our commitment to reliable, secure, and sustainable digital infrastructure.
As part of the CO+I Cloud Infrastructure Acquisition team, you will lead global program execution for a portfolio of real estate assets including both prepositioned and in-development sites. You will own the planning, scheduling, and performance tracking required to deliver land, energy, and network readiness aligned with business demand. This role operates at the intersection of strategy and execution, with influence across regional delivery teams, engineering, energy, and network planning. It requires an exceptional ability to manage complexity, build systems for accountability and deliver results at scale.
Responsibilities
+ Own and manage a global portfolio of real estate assets, ensuring visibility into both speculative and production sites across regions.
+ Define and evolve metrics to evaluate program health, delivery velocity, and risk across all infrastructure readiness dimensions.
+ Maintain integrated project schedules across land, energy, and network workstreams—aligned to Microsoft’s capacity roadmap.
+ Facilitate regular reviews with cross-functional teams to validate progress, identify bottlenecks, and align on critical path actions.
+ Drive proactive risk identification and mitigation to protect delivery timelines and enable agile decision-making.
+ Improve program reporting and data systems to support real-time visibility and portfolio-level insights.
+ Lead collaborative planning sessions to align stakeholders, optimize dependencies, and ensure milestone accuracy.
+ Translate complex program challenges into clear action plans using data, systems thinking, and plain language.
+ Promote tool adoption and process improvements that enhance schedule integrity and operational predictability.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Real Estate, Project Management, or related field AND 7+ years relevant experience
+ OR 10+ years equivalent experience.
+ 7+ years people management experience.
+ 7+ years of experience in real estate strategy, capital program management, or complex infrastructure delivery.
Background Check Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
+ Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
While not required, we also look for the following **Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Real Estate, Project management, or a related field AND 10+ years Portfolio Management, Real Estate, or Office Management experience
+ OR 15+ years equivalent experience.
+ Analytical and systems-thinking capabilities, with a focus on root cause problem solving and risk management.
+ Proven ability to drive clarity and accountability across complex portfolios, with a focus on outcomes and delivery discipline.
+ Track record of success leading global, cross-functional teams in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
+ Deep experience managing delivery for capital-intensive projects in datacenter, energy, or other industrial sectors.
Real Estate Portfolio Management M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $130,900 - $277,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,600 - $303,600 per year.
