    The Emergency Management Intern directly contributes to efficient and effective whole-community response to incidents or events. This is accomplished through direct support to and project engagement with emergency management officers across the core functional areas of training, planning, logistics, and human services. This is a unique opportunity for an inquisitive, self-motivated, and creative individual to make a positive impact on Sarasota County while gaining experience in the field of Emergency Management. The Intern will have opportunities to both grow existing competencies and learn new skills. Through real-world experience the Intern will gain direction and insight that will further their professional and educational development.

    Your internship will include impactful hands-on work within a department, networking, professional development, and building long lasting connections with other interns, mentors, and Sarasota County team members.

    Department Responsibilities:

    + ​ Collaborate with your department colleagues to make and influence real changes.

    + Standard Operating Procedure and Standard Operating Guide development

    + Planning for delivery of critical community services during disaster

    + Disaster response training and exercises

    + Inventory and Accountability of emergency supplies and equipment

    + Community Emergency Response Team organization and training

    + Assist with proof of compliance documentation for the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP)

    + Serve as the Point of Contact for the internship program with the Emergency Management Division for training, events, and activities

    + Participate in all exercises and trainings

    + Serve in a support role at the Emergency Operations Center during any disaster activations

    + As needed; assist with plans writing and review, clerical support, and general office support

     

    About You

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + At least 18 years old, or age 16 with parental consent.

    + High school diploma, or equivalent (if applicable).

    + Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!

    + Active student, or graduated August 2023 or later.

    + Candidates currently working toward a degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, or closely related field.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

    + Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced atmosphere.

    + Creative problem-solving skills.

    + Sufficient personal initiative, confidence and responsibility to own a project and its success.

    + Energy and tenacity to stick with assigned projects and find a path forward to completion.

    + Temperament to learn – adjusting to make improvements and absorbing constructive advice.

    + Ability to apply and follow protocols of project management.
