Job Title: Director of Engineering – Broadcast and Digital Properties
Position Summary:
KTLA is seeking an experienced and innovative Director of Engineering to lead and manage all technical operations related to our broadcast infrastructure and digital media platforms. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and scalability of our on-air and online delivery systems, overseeing a team of engineers, and driving modernization initiatives to support evolving viewer habits. The ideal candidate will also have prior experience working in a union environment and demonstrated ability to effectively manage teams operating under collective bargaining agreements, ensuring compliance while fostering positive labor relations.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Plan and manage staff, training and performance evaluations for the Engineering Department.
+ Oversee maintenance and performance of all RF, production, transmission, and distributions systems (TV, cable, etc.)
+ Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and industry standards and best practices.
+ Lead design and execution of broadcast upgrades, including IP-based workflows, ATSC 3.0 transition, and disaster recovery systems.
+ Coordinate live event and studio production engineering needs.
+ Manage architecture, performance and scalability of digital content delivery platforms (OTT, streaming, mobile apps, websites).
+ Collaborate with product development and content teams to integrate broadcast content with digital systems.
+ Ensure robust CDN integration, video encoding pipelines, and real time performance monitoring.
Team Leadership & Strategy:
+ Lead and mentor a cross-functional engineering team (broadcast, IT, software and digital)
+ Develop and manage budgets, capital projects, and vendor relationships
+ Define engineering roadmaps alighted with business goals and new technologies.
+ Ensure 24/7 operational readiness for all platforms, with on-call support protocols.
+ Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Broadcast Technology, or related field – or an equivalent of education and work-related experience.
+ 10+ years in broadcast or digital media engineering with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
+ Deep knowledge of broadcast systems (SDI/IP infrastructure, transmitters, master control).
+ Strong understanding of digital video technologies: OTT, streaming protocols, video CMS, encoding, and CDN management.
+ Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, etc.) automation tools, and practices is a plus.
+ Familiarity with security and compliance standards for both broadcast and digital media.
+ Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
+ Proficiency with common office software (Excel, Microsoft Office apps)
+ Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays if needed.

Compensation: $190,000+ based on experience
