    Summary The technologist will operate and monitor neurodiagnostic equipment in the Neurophysiology Laboratory at Sacramento. The technologist independently performs routine and specialized electroencephalography (EEG) including awake, drowsy and asleep recordings, portable recordings, intensive care recordings, and electrocerebral silence recordings. The technologist will also monitor and perform inpatient video electroencephalographic telemetry (VET) in long term video monitoring. Responsibilities In addition to electroencephalographic testing, they perform routine nerve conduction velocities (NCV) and routine evoked potentials (EP). The technologist consistently performs high quality studies for complex and non-routine procedures in difficult and demanding environments such as the intensive care unit. The technologist will follow established laboratory and/or hospital guidelines in completing "administrative duties" for each test performed. The technologist will have knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. They will work with nurse practitioners, residents, fellows, and physicians to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. The technologist will evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations for purchase to improve operations. They will identify staff educational or training needs and implement a plan for training. The technologist is responsible for maintaining an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies for Neurology Service staff at Sacramento and satellite sites within VA Northern California Healthcare System (VANCHCS). Additional duties include: The technologist will coordinate a continued effort to install an all-new integrated system for EEG, EMG and EP at Sacramento VAMC and satellite sites within VANCHCS. The technologist will independently operate a variety of neurodiagnostic equipment. The technologist will conduct routine maintenance and adjustment checks on the equipment. The technologist will recognize, and trouble shoot equipment failures. The technologist will understand medical terminology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuroradiology and how these relate to the neurodiagnostic testing being performed. The technologist will have knowledge of acute neurologic disorders and methods of treatment. The technologist has knowledge of neuropharmacology and specifically knows antiepileptic and other neurological medication effects on neurodiagnostic studies. The EEG technologist will utilize standard testing positions for the procedure being performed but will also have knowledge of alternate positions for testing of patients with common physical disabilities. They will fully explain the testing procedure to the patient and family members and alleviate fears. They will utilize the 10/20 method of electrode application during EEG's. The technologist utilizes the video EEG telemetry system with seizure and spike detection software. The EEG technologist will know the typical patient reaction to the neurodiagnostic procedure being performed and monitor for signs of patient distress. The technologist will interact with other healthcare professionals to discuss the indications, value, possible outcomes, and limitations of testing. The technologist will train and provide support to the lead MITs who will perform at satellite sites including Redding, Chico, Yuba City and Martinez within VANCHCS. The technologist will build and manage scheduling templates for neurophysiology procedures for all neurology providers, FTE, fee basis staff, and locum tenens on an ongoing basis. Operate independently with EEG, NCS and Evoked Potential equipment in the EEG Lab and at the bedside. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm (PST) Virtual: This is not a virtual position. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English. Certification: Registration by the American Board of Registration of EEG, CNIM &EP Technologists (ABRET) or the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AEET) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Medical Instrument Technician (Electroencephalography) GS-9: Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures. *2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. *4. Ability to manage and supervise employees. *5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Certification. Registration by the American Board of Registration of EEG, CNIM &EP Technologists (ABRET) or the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AEET) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
