    Summary The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Wichita, Kansas is currently recruiting for a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer. Responsibilities Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer is responsible for developing formal and informal written plans for the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) training program. The incumbent facilitates training of SPS staff through educational programs and job specific instruction. The MST SPS Trainer is responsible for the following: Improving SPS processes by facilitating the application of new technology of reusable medical devices by training all new and existing staff. Documenting and assessing staff's training, to identify areas of strength and need. Developing an education plan to maintain and improve knowledge in specialized areas of processing reusable medical devices. Participating in tracking, trending, and analyzing data. Identifying opportunities for improvement, making recommendations, and/or preparing reports based on findings. Developing and conducting the annual review of the SPS preceptor program. The MST Trainer also has knowledge of and ability in receiving contaminated critical and semi-critical reusable medical equipment (RME) in the decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area. Additional functions of the position include, but are not limited to: Disassembling the RME and determining the correct cleaning methods. Inspecting, assembling, and determining the correct method and packaging for sterilization, to include: steam, Sterra, Steris, and high-level disinfecting scope processors. Performing and documenting daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment. Utilizing knowledge of and ability to assemble highly complex instrument sets, such as: open heart, major orthopedic joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy, and complex endoscopic instrumentation. Troubleshooting and analyzing mechanical failures and making necessary adjustments. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm Compressed/Flexible: Flexible scheduling of hours available with management approval. Experience and/or Education (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification. None. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grandfather Provision. A Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer employed in VHA on the effective date of the qualification standard (05/28/2014) who did not meet all the basic requirements in this standard may not be promoted beyond the full performance level (GS-0622-06) or be newly placed in supervisory or managerial positions until meeting the full qualification requirements. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements as stated above, the GS-07 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer must meet the following requirements: Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of SPS and Infection Prevention regulations. Knowledge of procedures and/or operations in training developed for, and operations of SPS functions for both new and existing staff. Ability to manage integrated training programs as it relates to sterile processing procedures. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel or other software programs in order to complete reports and develop skills. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and management officials in regards to sterile processing procedures. Assignment: The MST Trainer is responsible for developing formal and informal written plans for the SPS training program, in compliance with accreditation organizations and VHA-specific requirements as well as medical center policies and procedures for SPS and related staff. Facilitates training of SPS staff through educational programs and job specific instruction. Improves SPS processes by facilitating the application for new technology of reusable medical devices by training all new and existing staff. Develops, monitors, and revises SPS educational programs for both new and existing staff. Documents and assesses staff's training, to identify areas of strength and need. Develops an education plan (literature review, continuing education, in-services, certification and/or formal education) to maintain and improve knowledge in specialized areas of processing reusable 9 medical devices. Participates in tracking, trending and analyzing education data. Identifies opportunities for improvement, makes recommendations and/or prepares reports based on findings. Develops and conducts the annual review of the SPS preceptor program. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-7 to GS-7. Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply, and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas with temperature, humidity, and lighting variations. The work requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds) may be required. On a regular recurring basis, the employee will be required to wear specific attire and personal protective equipment (PPE). The employee may also alternate between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment requiring to don and doff protective attire and personal PPE frequently. The employee may be subject to exposures such as, but not limited to, handling hot items, foul odors, chemical handling and hazards, wet and/or slippery surfaces/floors, and excessive noise.
