    The Transit Police Department is one of the fastest growing law enforcement agencies in the state due the expansion of light rail and Rapid Transit Bus systems. There is an authorized strength of 171 full-time officers, 80 part-time officers, 55 community service officers and 40 administrative staff dedicated to one thing: public safety on and near our transit system.

    How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

    TheAdministrator, Property & Evidence is responsible for coordinating and managing the daily evidence tasks involving the receipt, disposition, processing and storage of evidence and property. Receives evidence, logs, categorizes and stores property and evidence maintaining the chain of custody.

     

    Note: This posting will establish a six (6) month eligibility list for current and future positions.

     

    What you would do in this job

     

    + Collect and process all property and evidence intake on a daily basis in accordance with department policy and procedure

    + Inventory all property and evidence using the Tracker system by assigning a control number and storage location

    + Release property to the general public

    + Complete evidence requests from internal and external partners according to data practice laws

    + Retain property and evidence according to state statues and department policy

    + Complete all necessary paperwork for unclaimed property

    + Purge evidence and recovered property in accordance with applicable laws and policies

    + Provide training to police officers and others in the proper packaging of evidence and property

    + Complete property and evidence audit when appropriate

    + Testify in court relative to evidence processing and handling

    + Other duties as assigned

     

    What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

    Any of the following combinations of administrative, inventory, or processing experience, including at least two (2) years of handling evidence or property in a law enforcement setting, and completed education in Law Enforcement, Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field:

    + High school diploma/GED with five (5) years of experience.

    + Associates degree with three (3) years of experience.

    + Bachelor’s degree, or higher, with one (1) year of experience.

    License and Certifications Requirements:

    + Ability to obtain Property and Evidence Management certification within one year of successful performance.

    What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

    + Experience using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)

    + Experience operating basic office equipment (computer, scanner, phone system, printer)

    + Experience with Minnesota Data Practices Act.

    + Experience maintaining confidential information preferably in a Law Enforcement Agency.

    + Experience working with a diverse workforce and communities

    + Detail-oriented, ability to multi-task, and excellent organization skills

    What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

    + Knowledge of general property and evidence intake, storage and release procedures relating to a property and evidence room

    + Knowledge of chain of custody procedures

    + Knowledge of data practice law involving retention schedules

    What your work environment would be:

    You would perform your work in a standard office setting. Work may sometimes require travel between your primary work site and other sites.

All applicants' background checks and fingerprints must be cleared by the Criminal Bureau of Apprehension in order to be a user of their CJIS system. Failure to be cleared by BCA will automatically nullify any job offer extended. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
