Job Summary
The Department of Emergency Medicine is searching for an independent, organized, and highly-motivated Research Laboratory Specialist Associate to join Dr. Cindy Hsu's laboratory. Dr. Hsu is an emergency medicine/critical care physician-scientist and the Division Chief of Critical Care in the Department of Emergency Medicine who strives to improve the outcome of cardiac arrest patients by transforming how we translate innovative therapies from large animal models to clinical care. Your role will be to assist with translational research projects that focus on testing novel therapies or devices in cardiac arrest large animal models. This position provides ample opportunities for professional growth through skill acquisitions, scientific publications, and mentorship.
As a Research Laboratory Technician, you will be a vital member of a growing multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Hsu. You will also work closely with several research faculty and staff within the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research & Innovation on other clinically-relevant large animal models including cardiac arrest, hemorrhagic shock, traumatic brain injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and septic shock. This position may require some overnight shifts.
**This is a 2-year position with an option to extend based on funding.** Starting salaries will vary depending upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
Responsibilities*
Research experiments (50%)
+ Consistently assist with surgical procedures for physiological monitoring of swine and a wide variety of biological sample collection/testing. Training will be provided when needed.
+ Maintain detailed and accurate post-operative records and provide medical support to the animals as needed
+ Assist with the perfusion and histological processing of tissue samples
+ Interact professionally and collaboratively with all members of the research team
Laboratory operations (20%)
+ Assist with the creation and maintenance of animal and experimental protocols
+ Maintain laboratory equipment and documentation of lab safety for compliance
+ Other tasks may include autoclaving, ordering supplies, preparation of stock solutions, and preparing surgical trays
Data management and analysis (20%)
+ Organize and maintain clear and accurate records of samples and data
+ Assist with data processing, analyses, and presentation to faculty investigators at lab meetings on regular basis
+ Assist with the creation of tables, charts, and graphs for lab meetings, publications, and grant proposals
Others responsibilities (10%)

Required Qualifications*
+ Must work well independently and in a group, have excellent organizational and time management skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, be detail-oriented and able to keep accurate records, and able to multitask.
+ Proficient in MS Office Suite.
+ Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Lead Level: Bachelor's degree or Licensed Veterinary Technician with at least 2-3 years of experience in using animal models
Senior Level: Bachelor's degree or Licensed Veterinary Technician with at least 1-2 years of experience in using animal models
Intermediate Level: High school diploma or associate's degree and 1 to 2 years research experience or Bachelor's degree and 0-1 years of research experience
Desired Qualifications*
+ Experience in veterinary medicine, surgery, and post-operative large animal care (especially swine) is highly desired.
+ Experience as an EMT or paramedic is highly desired.
+ Have a strong interest in cardiac arrest and critical care research with self-motivation for independent learning and enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise.
+ Additional experience with basic histology or cellular/molecular biology techniques are desired.
+ Desire to learn complex data management skills.
Work Schedule
40 hours/week, some night shifts required
Full time Monday thru Friday 8am-5pm with the potential for after hours depending on the project.

Additional Information
**This is a 2-year position with an option to extend based on funding.** At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and you will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
