Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a diversity of technical assignments which are broadly outlined, require some theoretical insight and occasionally require the interpretation of results. Exercises complex skill and judgment, and knowledge of the principles and methods of a technical field. Serves as a resource to physicians, nurses and other laboratory personnel regarding specimen handling and processing.
Job Description:
+ With general supervision and direction, accessions outside slide consultations and reference cases in the laboratory information system. Creates the pathology report by entering the gross description and labels outside slides and blocks with URMC accession number. Triages cases to the appropriate subspecialty or pathologist. Maintain filing system and computer retrieve/return log for outside material. Maintain a pending list for additional material received at the request of our pathologist. Return outside material after 30 days via FedEx. Handle phone calls from clinicians or clinician’s offices requesting reports or updates on specimen processing. Process additional testing requests per outside location or Cancer Center. Maintain a relationship with clinical offices and providers to ensure accurate and timely reporting of diagnostic information on referred material. **90%**
+ Serves as backup to other support staff and as general support for the pathologists and laboratory supervisors and staff. **5%**
+ Greet and direct visitors to the unit. Other duties as assigned. **5%**

+ Reports to: Surgical Pathology Supervisor
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
+ Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and projects.
+ Ability to interact effectively and professionally with co-workers, customers, and vendors.
+ Good computer and organizational skills.
+ Ability to adjust work schedule if needed to meet project timelines.
+ Professional discretion with confidential patient results.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
+ Excellent Communication, word processing and computer skills are essential.
+ Is able to prioritize and maintain focus when responsible for the completion of multiple tasks during one shift.
+ Adherence to all University, Division and Department policies.
+ Demonstrates all aspects of iCARE values.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
+ Associate's degree in Laboratory Sciences and technical training closely related to this position required
+ 1 year of laboratory experience preferred
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Familiarity with medical terminology preferred
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in laboratory and familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems, Medical Terminology, Microsoft Office Suite, eRecord
