Authorities & Responsibilities

The Forensic Chemist:

+ Process evidence suspected of containing controlled substance(s) submitted to the ASCL by law enforcement agencies

+ Present expert forensic testimony in court on chemical analytical methodology used to analyze evidence and obtain results

+ Participate in pretrial conferences and provide consultation to law enforcement and judicial officials on evidence collection, preservation methods and analysis results. Instruct law enforcement officials on proper methods of confiscating, preserving, and disposing of toxic chemicals, waste and equipment found in clandestine drug laboratories

+ Verify the correct operation of scientific instruments and perform routine maintenance as needed. Prepare and verify reference materials and reagents according to established guidelines

+ Review current scientific literature. Study and validate new forensic analytical procedures and modify new and/or old procedures as necessary

+ Attend and participate in professional meetings and seminars to keep abreast of new technologies and methods in chemistry

+ Assist with training new laboratory staff in performing standardized laboratory tests.

+ Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned  Process evidence suspected of containing controlled substance(s) or chemicals that are suspected of being used to manufacture a controlled substance submitted to the ASCL by law enforcement agencies. (Illicit Lab chemist only)

+ On call to aid law enforcement in safely dismantling illicit laboratories and collecting representative samples. (Illicit Lab chemist only)

Minimum Qualifications

The Forensic Chemist must possess a baccalaureate or advanced degree in chemistry, biology, or a closely related field with knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry, chemical analysis and laboratory equipment. Before performing casework, the forensic chemist will be required to successfully complete an internal training program that will include competency sample testing, written and oral examination, and a mock trial (this training program can be modified based on experience).

Job Summary

The Forensic Scientist is responsible for the scientific analysis of physical evidence related to criminal investigations. This role involves conducting laboratory testing, preparing detailed forensic reports, and providing expert testimony in legal proceedings.

Primary Responsibilities

Conduct scientific examinations and analyses on forensic evidence, including but not limited to DNA, toxicology, ballistics, controlled substances, trace evidence, and digital forensics. Maintain strict adherence to forensic protocols, laboratory standards, and chain-of-custody procedures. Operate and maintain specialized forensic instruments and laboratory equipment. Document, interpret, and validate forensic test results with a high degree of accuracy. Maintain detailed logs, reports, and case files to document forensic procedures and findings. Prepare and maintain detailed forensic reports and technical documentation. Ensure timely completion of forensic casework while prioritizing urgent cases as needed. Assist law enforcement agencies in interpreting forensic findings and understanding forensic methodologies. Provide expert testimony in court proceedings to explain forensic findings clearly and objectively. Work closely with prosecutors, defense attorneys, and investigators to present forensic evidence effectively. Adhere to all legal and ethical standards for forensic science and courtroom testimony. Participate in proficiency testing, forensic audits, and laboratory accreditation programs. Follow all state and federal forensic regulations, safety protocols, and ethical guidelines. Work collaboratively with law enforcement, attorneys, medical examiners, and other forensic professionals.

Knowledge and Skills

Strong knowledge of forensic science principles, laboratory techniques, and analytical procedures. Proficiency in scientific instrumentation, forensic databases, and digital analysis tools. Ability to examine, interpret, and validate complex forensic evidence. Exceptional precision in handling and analyzing evidence. Ability to document forensic processes thoroughly and ensure proper chain-of-custody management. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for forensic reporting and expert testimony. Ability to explain technical forensic concepts in an understandable manner to legal professionals and juries. Strong adherence to legal and ethical forensic science standards. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

Minimum Qualifications

At least two years of experience in forensic science, crime scene investigation, laboratory analysis, or a related field.
