    Job Summary

    Serving the U-M community, Custodial & Grounds Services (CGS) is the steward of the buildings and grounds that make the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan unique. Our employees are dedicated to the preservation of the academic and medical campuses and take pride in providing exceptional customer service while conserving, enhancing, and maintaining more than 1200 acres of campus.

    maintenance, and landscape design services in the support of a safe, functional, and attractive campus

     

    environment.

     

    Reporting to the Grounds Manager, the Grounds Services Supervisor is one of three Zone Supervisor positions within Grounds Services. This position has oversight of the south and central zones with direct responsibility for four Specialists, sixteen AFSCME staff, and roughly ten temporary employees.

    Responsibilities*

    + Supervises assigned staff for Grounds Services, focusing on the maintenance of landscape, turf, site furniture, and hardscapes.

    + Manage assigned Grounds Workplan responsibilities.

    + Collaborates daily with other Grounds Supervisors to ensure a safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing campus.

    + Implements strategies to reduce landscape chemical use with a focus on organic maintenance, including expanding natural areas and native plantings.

    + Manages crew budgets and staffing levels according to work plans.

    + Ensures timely snow and ice removal throughout the University Campus.

    + Supervises work in progress to ensure that appropriate Grounds Services maintenance methods, work schedules, safety, and other work standards are being adhered to.

    + Manages personnel issues including, but not limited to, hiring, firing, coaching, discipline, and resolving issues related to union contracts.

    + Continually develops and implements safety and operating training and guidelines for the use of general and specialized grounds equipment.

    + Researches and coordinates the development of specifications for the purchase of new equipment to enhance the efficiency of Grounds operations.

    + Stay current with industry updates, trends, and best practices.

    + Reviews proposed landscape designs and confers with design professionals and other personnel regarding proposed designs and plant selections.

    + Develops Grounds Services staff by identifying skill gaps, providing training, coaching, and guidance, and conducting or overseeing the annual performance appraisal process.

    + Leads in the implementation of comprehensive ongoing training (orientation, best-practices, and safety) for employees.

    + Daily use of technology, including internet browsers, Google and Google Drive, mobile phone, email, as well as reviewing and approving employees' time.

    + Assist with managing all grounds fleet vehicles and equipment, including developing bid specifications and procurement.

    + Inspect and coordinate facility repairs for CGS with direct oversight of the south and central zone shops.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Associate degree in a related field or equivalent experience

    + Minimum of two years of experience supervising the work of others

    + Minimum of two years of experiencewith professional snow removal operations and equipment

    + Valid driver's license and ability to receive and maintain a DOT medical card

    + Must have and maintain MDARD Pesticide Applicators Certification with both 3b and 6 categories, or the ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire

    + Ability to communicate professionally and effectively within a diverse organization.

    + Strong people management skills

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience

    + Experience supervising bargained-for staff

    + Proven ability to manage budgets, estimate costs, and develop schedules

    + Involved with or is a member of a green industry association or organization

     

    Licensure & Certification

     

    Must have and maintain MDARD Pesticide Applicators Certification with both 3b and 6 categories, or the ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire

     

    Work Schedule

     

    Expected work schedule for this day shift position is Monday - Friday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM. Work schedule is subject to change based on operational needs.
