    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Sociology of Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks to fill one faculty line at the Assistant Professor level beginning in September 2026.

The sociology department at Hunter College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in migration. The successful candidate will use qualitative or quantitative methods to center the experiences of people who are migrating or have migrated and their children. We are interested in scholarship that critically examines the institutions that shape people’s possibilities in a world made unequal by forces like imperialism, racism, sex/gender oppression, environmental ravaging, and economic exploitation. We are particularly interested in work that speaks to departures from Southern and Central America, Mexico, and/or the Caribbean, as well as arrival in the U.S. and the consequences of U.S. immigration policy, though we are open to scholarship that attends to migration from any region of the world.

The scholar will join a productive and energetic Sociology department working to build synergy and public engagement while collaborating with various programs and institutions across Hunter College. We are located in New York City and offer a liberal arts major as well as a master’s program to a large, diverse and vibrant student body. Hunter College is one of the eleven senior colleges of the City University of New York with close to 20,000 students and the Department has over 400 majors. Hunter is committed to active engagement with students and the community at large, and embraces equity, inclusiveness, and global awareness in all dimensions of our work.

This position involves teaching, research, and guidance duties in the scholar’s area(s) of expertise. The faculty member will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

    QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in sociology or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
