    Overview

    Chaplains provide spiritual care to patients, visitors, and team members in UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s. They provide consultation to the treatment team on the spiritual and emotional issues affecting patient care. Chaplains offer spiritual care that enhances patient adjustment to illness and treatment, eases stress associated with hospitalization, and contributes to satisfaction of patients and visitors.

    Responsibilities

    Direct Patient Care

     

    + Participates in the provision of spiritual care for patients, visitors, and UPH – St. Luke’s team members from all faith backgrounds.

    + Participates in hospital coverage as determined by department and hospital.

    + Documents work in timely and effective manner.

    + Provides specific services that support the interdisciplinary care team, such as clinical education and debriefing.

    + Supports strong relationships with community clergy and volunteer Eucharistic ministers,

    + Facilitates the completion of Advance Directives with patients, family members, staff, and community members upon request.

    + Communicate regularly with the interdisciplinary health care team, participate in rounds and care conferences.

    + Maintains confidentiality.

     

    Organizational Responsibilities

     

    + Participates in committee work of the department and organization (e.g. Wellness Committee, Patient Family Experience Council, Ethics Committee, etc.) as assigned.

    + Partakes in continuing education opportunities, both as a participant and as a leader/organizer.

    + Attends departmental events.

    + Contributes to the expertise of the department through knowledge distribution, research, unique certification, etc.

    + Participates in the education of CPE students and interns as needed.

    Qualifications

    + Master’s Degree from an accredited seminary, theological school, or equivalent

    + Successful completion of two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE or equivalent).

    + Previous experience as a chaplain in a health care or other clinical setting is highly desirable. Related work experience will be considered.

    + Board Certified Chaplain (APC, NCC, SCA, etc.)

    + If not Board Certified when hired, certification within 2 years of hire required for continued employment

    + Until certified, will work under direct supervision of Board Certified Chaplain

    + Communicates effectively in written and spoken English.

    + Technologically proficient (Microsoft Office, email communication, mobile utilization, web navigation, etc.)

    + Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate well with others.

    + Self-directed and capable in self-development.

    + Demonstrates theoretical and practical knowledge of human responses to illness, crisis, loss, and hospitalization.

    + An awareness of cultural diversity and associated spiritual practices.

    + Ability to work with persons from a wide variety of spiritual backgrounds and support them in their own perspective.

    + Ability to be a non-anxious presence in the face of sometimes very stressful circumstances.

    + Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
