    ABOUT US

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) (https://portal.ct.gov/deep) is charged with conserving, improving, and protecting the natural resources and the environment of the state of Connecticut as well as making cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy available for the people and businesses of the state. The agency is also committed to playing a positive role in rebuilding Connecticut’s economy and creating jobs – and to foster a sustainable and prosperous economic future for the state.

The Bureau of Materials Management & Compliance Assurance (MMCA) (https://portal.ct.gov/deep/about/main/materials-management) mission is to work to ensure the proper management - handling, use, and disposal - of materials including pesticides, mercury, PCBs, and petroleum products. Through a number of different mechanisms - outreach and education, product handling efforts and phase outs, training, and regulatory activity - the Department is working to develop better stewardship of these materials to protect environmental quality and public safety for Connecticut's current and future generations.

The Corrective Action Unit (CAU) assists in fulfilling the DEEP’s critical mission of restoration, protection, and conservation of Connecticut’s water and land resources and protection of public health and safety. The CAU reviews and approves remedial strategies completed pursuant to formal and informal enforcement actions and spill responses, reviews investigation and cleanup plans, reviews fields investigations and tracks state cleanup compliance, and tracks federal polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and leaking Underground Storage Tank (UST) grant requirements.

The Licensing and Enforcement Unit (LEU) provides compliance assistance to the regulated community and enforcement related activities, issues informal and formal enforcement actions, and conducts electronic Underground Storage Tank (UST) compliance inspections to determine compliance with regulatory requirements and related activities.
