    Job Title: Assistant Coach - Girls Junior Varsity Hockey

     

    Department: Athletics

     

    Reports To: Head Varsity Coach & Director of Athletics

     

    Season: Winter (October 27 - February 2nd)

    Position Summary

    The Blake School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Coach for the Girls Junior Varsity Hockey team. This individual will support the head varsity and JV coaches in fostering a positive, developmentally focused environment where student-athletes can grow in skill, confidence, and sportsmanship. The ideal candidate brings a love of the game, a passion for mentoring young athletes, and a commitment to Blake’s core values of integrity, respect, and excellence.

    Essential Responsibilities

    Support Program Development

    + Assist in leading the Junior Varsity team, including practices, games, and off-ice development

    + Collaborate with the varsity and JV head coaches to ensure consistency across the program

    + Contribute to creating a positive and inclusive team culture that emphasizes effort, growth, and respect

    Player Development

    + Provide individual feedback and instruction to help players build hockey IQ and skills

    + Foster the physical, mental, and emotional development of student-athletes

    + Encourage leadership and team accountability among JV players

    Game & Practice Responsibilities

    + Help design and execute engaging, structured practices

    + Support in-game decision-making and bench management during JV competitions

    + Assist with film review, stat tracking, and other player evaluation tools as needed

    Communication & Leadership

    + Maintain open, respectful communication with players, families, and coaching staff

    + Reinforce program expectations, schedules, and behavioral standards

    + Be a positive role model on and off the ice

    Administrative Support

    + Assist with equipment management, score reporting, and transportation logistics

    + Ensure student-athletes adhere to MSHSL and Blake School policies

    + Attend coaches meetings, training sessions, and evaluations

    Required Experience:

    Qualifications

    + Prior coaching or playing experience in hockey (high school, college, or youth levels)

    + Strong understanding of hockey fundamentals, strategies, and safety practices

    + Ability to connect with and motivate high school athletes

    + Organized, communicative, and committed to team values

    + CPR/First Aid certification and MSHSL coaching certification (or willingness to complete upon hire)

    + Availability for afternoon/evening practices and weekend games

    Program Overview

    The Blake Girls Hockey program is a competitive co-op team that competes in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). With a tradition of excellence and player development, Blake values sports as a key component of the student experience. The JV team serves as a critical pipeline for player growth and varsity readiness.
