The Hartford is seeking a Head of Catastrophe Risk to lead and develop a team of risk management professionals focused on assessing, monitoring, reporting and managing insurance risks. Reporting to the Enterprise Chief Risk Officer of The Hartford, this individual is a key executive thought leader and will provide critical insights and analysis to shape risk policy and business strategies for the enterprise responsible for both second line of defense and actively supporting the first line.
The successful candidate will collaborate with executives and business leaders across the organization to proactively identify, assess, and manage insurance related systemic risks, including natural catastrophe, terrorism and mortality/morbidity. In addition, they will lead efforts to develop risk management practices and associated policies providing the Enterprise Risk and Capital Committee (“ERCC”) and The Board of Directors (“BOD”) with an independent assessment of the company’s existing and emerging insurance risk profile, and its capabilities to effectively manage such risks.
Responsibilities:
+ Provide leadership, vision and direction across the enterprise to identify and appropriately assess, monitor and manage all systemic risks to the organization including natural catastrophes, pandemics as well as material changes in economic, political and regulatory factors that can impact underwriting results
+ Collaborate with the ERCC and business leaders across the organization to establish insurance risk management frameworks, limits, and tolerances. Develop an in-depth understanding of current and future challenges and deliver value-added insights, tools, assessments and strategies to improve the portfolio risk-return.
+ Ensure regular enhancements of risk assessment models, catastrophe pricing models and risk selection/hazard assessment metric and tools incorporating latest trends, scientific developments and learnings from claims experience .
+ Work with the ERCC to establish the enterprise insurance risk capacity and allocation of capacity to the business segments.
+ In collaboration with business segments, assess risk associated with new product development.
+ Represent the company’s insurance risk capabilities and governance structure with external parties, including regulators, rating agencies and government committees.
+ Oversee the ceded reinsurance process; evaluate efficacy of different structures and recommend reinsurance structure that provides the targeted value.
+ Participate in Credit and Counterparty Security Committee to monitor and approve insurance and reinsurance counterparties.
+ Attract, develop and retain a high performing team.
Qualifications:
+ 15+ years’ experience in the P&C insurance industry, including risk management leadership experience.
+ Deep expertise in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), data analytics models, and catastrophe modeling.
+ Experience with a broad range of quantitative, financial and risk management techniques and systems.
+ Ability to develop tools to help underwriters and risk managers understand, mitigate and manage risks.
+ Proven track record strengthening risk assessment, risk selection, and underwriting including the ability to turn complex challenges into actionable insights and continuously improve frameworks for managing risk.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially with respect to articulating highly complex concepts to both more technical and less technical audiences. Proven ability to deliver board-level presentations.
+ Strong people management and leadership skills; demonstrated ability to attract and retain a high performing team.
+ Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills, with thorough attention to detail.
+ Exceptional organization, planning, documentation and problem-solving skills.
+ Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
+ Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
Location:
This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in The Hartford’s Hartford, CT office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$236,000 - $354,000
