Job Description
Counsels University Health (UH), UH workforce members (WFM), affiliated entities, and the UH medical staff on legal aspects of all professional and business matters of the Corporation, with a view toward managing risk, and preventing disputes and litigation.
Evaluates need for, facilitates communication with and supervises outside counsel in various matters. Manages outside counsel budget in collaboration with Associate General Counsel.
Provides guidance and counsel on the use, acquisition, and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies in clinical, administrative, and research settings; evaluates and advises on issues related to algorithmic bias, transparency, patient consent, data provenance, and explainability; tracks and interprets new legislation and regulatory guidance related to AI in healthcare; collaborates with business leaders and vendors to ensure responsible AI use aligned with legal, ethical, and institutional standards; serves on the UH Artificial Intelligence Committee.
Oversees and manages UH’s guardianship program, ensuring that legally and ethically sound decisions are made for patients who lack decision-making capacity and do not have appropriate surrogates; provide legal guidance and operational support for all guardianship-related matters, working closely with clinical, social work, case management, and behavioral health teams, as well as external guardianship counsel and judicial entities.
Works closely with UH Compliance Officer, Information Security, and Health Information Management to manage compliance with data privacy laws and regulations; review and negotiate data privacy and vendor agreements; and prevent, investigate, and respond to data breaches.
Manages legal responses to third parties, including subpoenas, discovery requests, and inquiries from state and federal governmental regulators, licensing boards, and law enforcement. Manages and oversees any associated investigations.
Works with Patient Safety, Quality, and Accreditation to support patient safety procedures and policies, survey responses, and licensure.
Develops and delivers training for WFM regarding requested topics, statutes and regulations, risk management, and any other timely, relevant issues or topics.
Collaborates with the Associate General Counsel and General Counsel regarding management of UH’s legal affairs, including insurance, auditor requests, and risk prevention and management strategies.
Performs the duties set forth above with respect to other legal areas at UH, including, but not limited to: litigation, intellectual property, real estate, taxation, corporate governance, development of hospital policies, worker’s compensation, and employment law, as requested by the Associate General Counsel or General Counsel
Represents the Office of General Counsel in internal committees and meetings as needed.
Promotes quality improvement, staff and patient safety and equity, and cultural diversity through department operations and by personal performance.
Participates in a rotating on-call schedule to provide after-hours legal support for urgent issues.
Minimum Requirements
Attorney licensed in the state of Missouri.
Three to four years legal experience in healthcare or other highly-regulated industries.
Preferred Qualifications
Healthcare data privacy experience.
Familiarity with AI technology including machine learning
