    Job Summary and Qualifications

     

    The Hyperbaric Technician accompanies patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatments in the chamber delivering care appropriate to his/her level of training and in accordance with standard policies and procedures. Assists in wound care and other patient care as required. Responsible for the safe and effective operation of the compression chamber system and supporting components. The Senior Hyperbaric Technician is also responsible for performing maintenance activities of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and associated systems and equipment, under the direction of the Hyperbaric Safety Specialist and reports any and all safety issues and/or concerns. The Hyperbaric Technician is responsible for providing services for inpatients, outpatients, and emergency patients of the following ages: infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

    Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics

    1. **Education:** High School Diploma

    2. **Experience:** One year of experience in compression chamber operations to include knowledge of decompression tables.

    3. Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).

    Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required:

    Required: ALL of the following:

    1. Maintains certification in Hyperbarics (CHT/CHS)

    2. License or certification as required by certification body is recommended but not required.

    Essential Job Functions:

    1. Evaluates equipment / supplies used in the chamber and ensures that they meet hospital Biomedical Department requirements as well as all safety requirements before they are permitted inside the chamber.

    2. Operates the compression chamber and supporting components and maintains operating, maintenance, safety logs and other required documentation, as specified in department policy.

    3. Observes patients and the hyperbaric systems during the course of hyperbaric oxygen treatments, reports unusual occurrences, and records appropriate entries in the medical record, as required and maintains a safe environment in the Center for patients and staff and ensures that adequate and safe decompression procedures are utilized for all personnel with a hyperbaric exposure.

    4. Ensures maintenance is completed and documented. Coordinates with Safety Director in completing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance logs.

    5. Prepares both chambers for fire suppression testing on a quarterly basis and coordinates fire suppression testing with Safety Specialist and Plant Management personnel, to include date and time of testing, follow-up action if needed, and submitting written report and results to Safety Specialist.

    6. Serves as one of the department’s Technical trainers for full-time and PRN staff and provides training related to the appropriate aspects of hyperbaric physiology, decompression tables, equipment operations and safety, and treatment protocols. Validates in-chamber safety training of new employees before their initial entry into the hyperbaric chamber. Monitors qualifications of inside chamber attendants on a monthly basis and ensures compliance of staff members.

    Additional Job Functions:

    1. Supports the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System. Understands and is committed to helping the Methodist Healthcare System and its associated facilities achieve its goals.

    2. Non-licensed staff May handle, pick up, deliver and/or stock non-controlled medications as directed by a licensed team member.

    3. Must learn and comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materials encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.

    4. Adheres to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrates ethical behavior as expected by our patients, colleagues and the community. Understands the personal obligation to report any activity that appears to violate applicable laws, rules regulations or the Code of Conduct itself.

    5. Completes other duties as assigned.

    Environmental and Physical Demands/Hazardous Conditions:

    **LIFTING/CARRYING DEMANDS** : Ability to lift, push and pull with assistance (mechanical or coworker) the weight of an average patient/heaviest object specific to the department.

     

    ( X ) MEDIUM WORK: Lifting 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Weighing up to 25 lbs.
