    Description of Job

    Fish health laboratory technician with experience in microbiology related to fish diseases. Major responsibilities include performing complex laboratory testing in the areas of bacteriology, virology,

     

    parasitology, and PCR, as well as sample collection. Applicant must be able to work both independently, and as part of a team, to conduct microbiological assays and assist others in laboratories as needed.

     

    Significant experience in a diagnostic microbiological lab environment is preferred. The candidate must have knowledge and experience in biological and molecular laboratory techniques, as well as the ability to use various laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, balances, etc. This position will require some sporadic travel, but most work will be conducted on site. Work hours will

     

    be limited to 40 hours per week. Specific responsibilities may include:

     

    + Collecting, receiving, labeling, and analyzing samples related to fish health inspections.

    + Performing microscopic, serological, and biochemical assays to identify

     

    bacterial/viral/parasitological pathogens.

     

    + Maintaining laboratory records including daily equipment logs, media logs, etc.

    + Preparing reagents and media for routine laboratory use.

    + Maintaining laboratory areas, equipment, and glassware in a clean and orderly fashion.

    + Cleaning, sterilizing, and calibrating laboratory equipment as needed.

    + Recording case data and test results accurately and in the specified format.

    + Providing QA program support for the AAHL by completing QA assignments, and ensuring adherence to both the AFS Fish Health Section of the QA Laboratory Program and AAHL SOPs.

     

    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

    + Must have a bachelor’s degree in biology (or related field)

    + Must be willing and able to work 40 hours per week.

    + Anticipated schedule is Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    + Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

    + Must have a current & valid drivers' license or reliable transportation.

    + Must have a current & valid driver’s license required for operating a state vehicle.

    + Preference may be given to applicants with or working towards a Natural Resources degree or similar education.

    + Possess strong [interpersonal communication skills] to deliver excellent customer service.

    + Basic computer skills required (MS Office Suite, Google App Suite)

    + Ability to work with limited supervision and work well within a team.

    + Must be willing and able to work outside, which may involve inclement weather.

    + Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds repeatedly during the course of a workday.

     

    PREFERRED EDUCATION: Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences or comparable work experience.
