    Job Summary

    The Department of Chemistry in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan is seeking applicants for a full-time Lecturer III position with an anticipated start of **August 25, 2026** . This is a non-tenure track position with a University Year appointment period (i.e., running from August 25 through May 24 each year). A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three (3) courses per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties. The initial appointment period will be four (4) years, and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the college.

    Responsibilities*

    Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer III position will include teaching assignments in the Department of Chemistry. The initial course assignments for this position would be in the areas of introductory analytical chemistry and physical chemistry. Initial course assignments could include CHEM 230 (Physical Chemistry Principles and Applications), CHEM 260 (Chemical Principles) and CHEM 261 (Introduction to Quantum Chemistry), CHEM 242 (Introductory Chemical Analysis Lab), CHEM 246/7 (Biomedical Chemistry Laboratory I + II), or CHEM 241 (Introduction to Chemical Analysis). However, in future years, alternative courses taught may also include upper-level courses in the candidate's field of expertise such as CHEM 461 (Quantum Mechanics), CHEM 463 (Thermodynamics and Kinetics), CHEM 447 (Physical Methods of Analysis), or general chemistry courses such as CHEM 125/126 (General CHEM Lab I/II) or CHEM 130 (General Chemistry). Additionally, the position would be expected to (a) participate in course and curriculum development, (b) do undergraduate advising, (c) assist with the coordination, training, and supervision of large (10-35) groups of GSIs in the introductory courses, (d) serve as course coordinators in multi-section courses that have multiple faculty instructors, (e) serve on appropriate departmental, College, and University committees, and (f) enhance the visibility of our undergraduate program with publications, presentations, or other service-related activities on campus.

    Required Qualifications*

    Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field. Lecturers in Chemistry should be able to teach in several introductory-level courses, including labs and lectures that cover fundamental subject matter in the areas of Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Biochemistry. Additionally, qualified candidates should be fluent in their subfield of expertise. Excellence in teaching and instructional service, along with a strong commitment to educating a diverse group of students, will be the principal criteria for selecting the successful candidate. The successful candidate must meet all degree requirements before the start date of the position.

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
