Job Description
At the University of Washington (UW), we believe in the power of inclusive innovation. As a UW employee, you’ll have the opportunity to make an impact—on campus, across the state, and around the world. At UW, your experiences and perspectives are not only valued—they’re essential.
Join our team at Accessible Technology Services (ATS) within UW Information Technology (UW-IT) and help lead the charge toward a more accessible and equitable digital future. We are currently seeking a Digital Accessibility Specialist to help ensure that technology used, created, and procured at UW is accessible to all—including individuals with disabilities.
What You’ll Do:
Evaluate the accessibility of UW websites, applications, and IT systems—both homegrown and third-party.
Conduct in-depth reviews using tools aligned with WCAG 2.1 AA standards and collaborate with designers, developers, and content creators across all UW campuses.
Review VPATs, ACRs, HECVATs and partner with UW Procurement Services and other stakeholders to assess the accessibility of third-party tools and platforms.
Provide clear, actionable reports and consult on web and software remediation.
Support UW’s compliance with new ADA Title II digital accessibility regulations, targeting substantial compliance by April 2026.
What You Bring:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, UX, Human-Centered Design, or related field — or equivalent experience.
2+ years of experience evaluating software/web accessibility.
Proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and accessibility testing tools.
Strong understanding of WCAG 2.1 AA, ARIA, and assistive technologies.
Excellent communication skills, especially when translating technical accessibility concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred:
Experience in higher education or large, decentralized organizations.
Familiarity with content management systems like WordPress and Drupal.
Knowledge of accessible document formats and academic material standards.
Why Join Us?
You’ll be joining a highly functional, mission-driven team that collaborates across the University. UW-IT and ATS are nationally recognized leaders in digital accessibility and inclusive technology practices. Here, your work won’t just meet compliance—it will change lives.
This position is eligible for 100% remote work.
This position is grant-funded for up to 18 months, with the potential for continuation based on performance and funding.
