    Scope of Job

    To perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and service activities related to the University campus grounds including campus events and setups and the general maintenance of grass, plants, and trees both indoor and outdoor. Responsible for the application of pest control services inside campus facilities.

    Description of Duties

    + Performs pest control services in and around campus facilities

    + Cleans and maintains all campus grounds; perform basic landscaping duties.

    + Maintains campus gardens including shrubberies, perennials, annual flowers and plants.

    + Operates mowers, weed eaters, and trimmers to cut grass; irrigates and fertilizes grass, trees, shrubs and flower beds.

    + Removes trash from building grounds and empties trash cans.

    + Applies insecticides and pesticides to plants and weeds as needed.

    + Assists with campus moves and event setups.

    + Assists with irrigation maintenance repairs as needed.

    + Cleans and maintains outdoor walkways, breezeways, stairways, loading docks and outdoor structures.

    + Performs moderate repairs in roadways and parking lots.

    + Cleans and maintains grounds maintenance equipment; troubleshoots and reports all problems for repairs.

    + May be required to have flexible work schedule, to include but not limited to: work evenings, weekends, Holidays, overtime and any campus emergencies.

    + Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

    Direct supervision from the assigned supervisor.

     

    Supervision Given

     

    Exercises general supervision over assigned staff.

    As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).

    Required Experience

    Three (3) or more years of experience in landscape care, maintenance and pest control application inside buildings.

    Preferred Experience

    Methods and techniques of maintenance and repair related to the assigned area of responsibility:

    Operational characteristics of equipment and tools used in the assigned area of responsibility. Use and operate a variety of tools and equipment such as hand-held and power tools, hydraulic lifts and forklifts required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.

    Standard office equipment.

    Working Conditions

    Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/outdoor environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

    Other

    Travel from site to site on the University campus; a constantly changing workplace; working with machinery; exposure to grease, dust and dirt; various weather conditions including inclement weather; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke and air contamination. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, bending, kneeling stooping, crawling, or climbing for extended periods of time; lifting and carrying moderate to heavy materials; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
