The Center for Student Involvement has an outstanding opportunity for a Student Activities Specialist to join their team.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Student Involvement (ADSI), the Student Activities Specialist is responsible for overseeing the creation, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive student activities program appropriate for the University of Washington Tacoma campus. Specifically, this position’s main responsibilities are to provide direct supervision of the Student Activities Board (SAB), major campus programs, and to be highly engaged with Welcome Days, Hendrix the Husky (campus mascot program, part of SAB), and marketing programs in the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) such as the Grit List email newsletter, campus TV ads, and @uwtinvolvement social media. In addition, the Student Activities Specialist will work on the Center for Student Involvement team to build a robust student life program that aligns closely with the UW Tacoma and Division of Student Affairs mission, vision, goals and strategic plans.
With the continued growth of the University of Washington Tacoma comes the need for increased direct support of student initiatives. It is believed that these student involvement opportunities, such as the Student Activities Board (SAB), can contribute to improving students’ personal growth as well as their satisfaction with student life. Robust campus programming should directly support a student’s sense of belonging and aid in retention efforts.
Working with the Student Activities Board will provide opportunities for campus student life to thrive. During the year, SAB provides 50+ opportunities for students to engage with campus activities, including speakers, movies, social events, and more. The Specialist will provide direct support and assistance to up to 8 student leaders, and to numerous student volunteers who work to bring these programs to campus and will oversee a budget funded by student fees. Additionally, this position will advise the SAB individually and as a group, process contracts and other paperwork, and ensure timely programs during the school year.
This position is also responsible for coordinating all Welcome Days programs alongside the Assistant Director of Student Involvement. Welcome Days programs occur throughout each academic quarter and are a critical first step at retaining students. This position will work on annual traditions like the W photo, and coordinate offerings from other offices across campus.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership, advising, training, coordination, and other support of the Student Activities Board (SAB)
+ Provide direct supervision, training, and support to up to 8 student employees, and numerous student volunteers
+ Implement assessment and review techniques to make sure students are performing job duties as assigned, as well as foster holistic student development
+ Evaluate SAB’s organizational structure for effectiveness and benefit of student learning
+ Provide guidance on effective event planning and support to large-scale campus programming
+ Supervise the Hendrix the Husky mascot program, including the training of 2 student mascot ambassadors, oversight of appearance scheduling, and maintenance of related equipment
+ Ensure payments to vendors are made, track budget, and direct yearly Request for Funds from the Services & Activities Fee Committee (SAFC)
+ Be present at SAB events (including set-up/tear-down, guest relations, crowd control, and representation of UW Tacoma) – this may include evening and weekend hours
+ Advocate for SAB’s presence and involvement in campus-wide efforts
+ Establish learning objectives and programmatic goals for student staff.
Develop, coordinate, execute, and evaluate Welcome Days programming opportunities and activities
+ Develop programmatic model for Welcome Days in collaboration with campus partners to foster a smooth transition between Orientation and campus integration for incoming and returning students
+ Recruit campus partners to host workshops, events, and other opportunities in order to create a robust calendar of involvement and/or educational experiences within the first two weeks of each academic quarter
+ Track and manage Welcome Days budget, and direct yearly Request for Funds from the Services & Activities Fee Committee
+ Facilitate contract negotiations with off-campus entities
+ Develop marketing strategies and produce advertising material for distribution to all incoming students
+ Assess programming and revise as necessary
+ Coordinate calendar events to include representation from both academic and student services
CSI Marketing
+ Prepare and submit budget request for annual budget to the Services and Activities Fee Committee (SAFC) for the CSI Student Marketing Assistant position. Hire, onboard, supervise, and provide development feedback to the Student Marketing Assistant who will provide CSI marketing and promotional support to the department and the UW Tacoma Community (as funding is available)
+ Develop practices for consistent and effective marketing across departmental programs within the Center for Student Involvement
+ Evaluate and enhance existing and established marketing and promotional strategies and techniques for CSI media that includes, but is not limited to the Grit List weekly email newsletter, digital signs on campus TVs, and social media
+ Coordinate and advise student marketing and outreach positions within the Center for Student Involvement on best practices for marketing to the campus community
Other Duties
+ Participation in interoffice committees and departmental meetings
+ Active participation in weekly CSI staff meetings and 1-on-1 with supervisor
+ Position may be assigned to serve on planning committees, special task forces or divisional working groups working groups, etc.
+ Support the overall event planning and scheduling of the OSCARs Banquet, to include marketing, vendor booking (supplies, catering, etc.), space setup, program development, etc. alongside Director of Student Involvement and Leadership.
+ Additional involvement could include divisional training and planning large-scale student engagement events, such as the annual Outstanding Student Ceremony for Awards & Recognition (OSCARS)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
+ Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, or any other related field
+ Minimum of two years’ experience advising student programs and/or organizations
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/** **certificat** **ion/registration
ADDITIONAL** **REQUIREMENTS
+ Demonstrated leadership in initiating and implementing educational programming among student groups/organizations
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work within a multi-cultural and diverse environment
+ Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks
+ Proven ability to work independently and in teams
+ Ability to use sound independent judgment in working with faculty, staff, students, employers, and represent the University appropriately
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Master's degree from an accredited institution in education, counseling, business administration, or related field
+ Knowledge and application of Student Development Theory
+ Experience building partnerships and collaborating across University departments
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$54,072.00 annual
