    Posting Description

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to carry out fundamental and applied research on charged particle interactions with materials in fusion environments, specifically MeV-energy “runaway” electrons with plasma facing components and surrounding structures, although studies could also extend to MeV-energy “fast” ions, neutrons, and gammas. Will use Monte Carlo charged particle simulations to model energy deposition and generation of secondary particles, and collaborate with a team of researchers to explore heating, melting, vaporization, and general damage in realistic geometries; investigate surrogate models; make original research contributions to the PSFC program; and produce work for publication, present work at scientific conferences, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

    Job Requirements

REQUIRED: PhD in plasma physics, high energy physics, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field; experience with Monte Carlo charged particle simulations (such as GEANT4 or MCNP); experience conducting original scientific research as well as publishing in scientific journals; and the ability to communicate effectively and work in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment with staff and students from MIT, other universities, national laboratories, and private industry. PREFERRED: Excellent programming skills and programming language knowledge such as Pythonis; and experience with tokamak physics or machine learning techniques.

The appointment will be for two years with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance.

Application materials should include a cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information of three references. These materials should be submitted as a single PDF in the resume field of the application.
