The ideal candidate will be responsible for reviewing candidate’s background forms, credit reports, and other records/reports. Completes background investigations of potential applicants under consideration for hire within the Police Department and throughout the City. The incumbent must possess knowledge applicable to the job such as state/federal laws, as well as City policies and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE AND APPLICATION OF

+ Selection standards set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) guidelines.

+ Confidentiality laws pertaining to personnel records, requests for information from other departments, the public, or the media regarding candidates.

+ Rationales for confidentiality sufficient to ensure the integrity and personal privacy of candidate background investigation files and all information contained therein.

+ Proper English to include correct spelling and grammar.

+ Effective customer service techniques.

+ Modern office equipment including computer and applicable software.

+ Sound safety practices.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is regularl y performed indoors in an office environment and requires heavy public contact in-person and over the phone. Position may require travel for outside field investigations.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

+ High school graduation or equivalent.

+ Two (2) years of paid experience performing the work of a background investigator in a public safety environment; OR Two (2) years of investigations experience (preferably in law enforcement).

+ Specialized training in a P.O.S.T. approved Background Investigation School is required.

+ Notary commissioned is highly desirable.

+ Must possess a valid California Class C driver license.

CANDIDATE SELECTION PROCESS

+ Application Review: A completed City of Cathedral City employment application is required. Incomplete applications may result in disqualification. Application review will begin immediately and will be screened on basis of relevant education, training, and experience.

+ Examination Phase:Based upon the information presented on the application, a limited number of candidates who possess qualifications most pertinent to the position will be invited to participate in the selection process. The selection process may include but is not limited to the following components: application review and evaluation, written examination or exercise, practice exercise and interview evaluation.

+ Establishment of Eligibility List:Candidates who successfully complete the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list pending further review by the department head and other qualifying procedures.
