Job Summary
This is an entry-level position to conduct laboratory and field-based data collection and analyses in the ocean sciences. Duties include supporting ongoing research, occasional field collections aboard research vessels, conducting research in collaboration with other personnel, collection and analysis of data, maintaining laboratory cleanliness and safety, writing reports, and data entry/management. Work will typically be performed under the supervision of a marine scientist or technical supervisor, although some ability to work autonomously is expected. The position will be located on the Gulf Park campus, but some travel will be required depending upon specific research needs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
+ Participates in scientific research efforts of moderate complexity
+ Participates in the collection and analysis of scientific data, including occasional field collections aboard a research vessel.
+ Maintains necessary research supplies, equipment, and infrastructure as dictated by research objectives.
+ Follow all field and lab safety protocols.
+ Participates in data entry/management and the preparation of scientific reports.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree in marine science (or related field) from an accredited four-year college or university.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
+ Experience operating and maintaining laboratory and field equipment and instruments
+ Strong technical communication skills, both in written and verbal form
+ Proficient use of personal computers and applications, including (but not limited to) Microsoft Office
+ Ability to follow detailed directions and work independently
+ Ability to be reliable, proactive, resourceful, and self-motivated
+ Knowledge of laboratory and field operational and safety protocols
+ Ability to effectively communicate with technical managers and co-workers to address needs of managers, sponsors, students, administrators, and the public
+ Skill to apply mathematical concepts to work-related needs
+ Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical information, procedures, testing standards, and regulations
Preferred Qualifications
Prior work experience in an analytical laboratory and/or in the field (particularly aboard research vessels) is preferred.
