Investigator
Full-time (40 hours) - $40.86 per hour / $85,000 annually
POSITION SUMMARY
The primary purpose of this position is to provide investigative support to the defending attorneys in an institutional office. The investigator works as part of the defense team to help meet the Office of the State Public Defender’s core goal – providing zealous holistic representation.
This is a non-classified position that reports to the Managing Attorney or their designee.
Example of Duties:
• Conducting interviews of all relevant witnesses and clients,
• Appearing in court as needed,
• Reviewing and analyzing discovery and other case documentation,
• Gathering, requesting and reviewing documents and records,
• Taking photographs and measurements,
• Serving subpoenas,
• Going into the field and engaging in face-to-face interactions with individuals to gather information and locate witnesses,
• Develops leads and sources of information,
• Conducts surveillance of both stationary and mobile subjects in a covert manner,
• Providing comprehensive reports of interviews and investigation,
• Preparing photographs, diagrams, maps and exhibits to facilitate improved understanding of a case,
• Working evenings and weekends, as investigations require,
• Entering and reviewing data in the Case Management System (CMS) according to CMS guidelines,
• Tracking own time in the CMS,
• Maintaining confidentiality of client information and adhering to ethical standards,
• Attend case planning and strategy meetings,
• Working both in and outside the office,
• Regular travel throughout the judicial district,
• Occasional travel outside the judicial district, and
• Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS
+ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, or closely related field; or
+ Completion of an associate degree from an accredited college in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field, and two years of criminal investigative experience; or
+ Four years of broad criminal investigative experience.
+ Possession of a valid Driver’s License and access to a motor vehicle to perform essential job-related functions.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires that the employee:
+ Sits 20% to 95% of a workday.
+ Lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls items up to 25 pounds.
+ Uses repetitive motions such as hand-wrist / fingering movements and grasping or reaching 25% to 90% of a workday.
+ Has normal (or corrected to within normal range) dexterity, tactile feeling, speaking, hearing, and seeing.
+ Talking and listening 30% to 75% of the workday.
+ Reading comprehension 40% to 90% of the workday.
+ Ability to drive a motor vehicle.
