    Description of Work Unit

    The Department of Animal Sciences has the unique mission of serving Colorado’s large and diverse livestock industries. Research, teaching and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture.

    Position Summary

    This full-time position provides care and maintenance of horses and facilities utilized by the CSU Dept. of Animal Sciences/Equine Sciences program at the Temple Grandin Equine Center ( TGEC ) located in Fort Collins, Colorado. A typical daily schedule includes an early morning shift, long lunch break, and late afternoon feeding/cleaning shift.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + A High School Diploma, General Education Development ( GED ), or equivalent.

    + Experience caring for horses at a horse boarding or training facility (not just owning a personal horse) for one year including feed management.

    + Ability to identify needed basic facility and equipment repairs.

    + Ability to work a split shift; meaning early morning start, break, and then return in afternoon.

    + Ability to work weekends and some holidays. All staff expected to work some weekends and some holidays.

    + Ability to work 40 hours per week. This is a full-time position.

    + Ability to lift up to 80 pounds (hay bales) approximately four times per day (with equipment to help lift and transport the hay).

    + Ability to work in inclement weather, including dusty, moist, hot and cold conditions.

    + Ability to secure a valid driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in equine sciences, animal sciences, or related field, Veterinarian Technician associates degree or vocational degree.

    + Previous work experience at an equine veterinarian hospital or equine assisted services center.

    + Experience performing basic facility and barn equipment repairs and maintenance.

    + Experience operating equipment such as small or large tractors, arena drags, skid steers, and utility task vehicles (UTVs/Gator).

    + Provide care for the well-being of horses, including feeding and watering, blanketing, turning out and bringing in horses based on weather and Equine Manager’s instructions.

    + Monitor horses closely for sign of illness, lameness, vices or other unwanted conditions.

    + Load/unload hay, grain and other feed and bedding as needed.

    + Observe medication, feed and commodity quality and report to the Equine Manager when there is a concern.

    + Monitor barn, indoor and outdoor housing spaces, and arena conditions and needs and report concerns to Equine Manager

    + Provide security and cleanliness of facility, including locking and unlocking facility’s entrance gate and facility doors, cleans stalls and outdoor pens, clean arena fencing, stalls, waterers, and provide general indoor arena cleaning, sweeping and fence repair as needed.

    + Perform basic facility repairs as needed.

    + Set up and remove panels as needed.
