    The Radiation Oncology Physicist ensures safe delivery of optimal radiation treatment to patients. The position provides abundant opportunities for collaboration with radiation oncology colleagues in the wider Banner and MD Anderson networks.

     

    The physicist verifies proper calibration, operation, and safety of radiation-producing machines and sources in accordance with established guidelines and protocols. The physicist ensures accuracy, quality, and safety of radiation therapy treatments. This includes reviewing treatment plans, assisting and supporting dosimetry and therapy staff, and performing measurements and evaluations as necessary. They physicist works with an interdisciplinary radiation oncology team to plan and deliver advanced specialized therapies such as HDR brachytherapy, SBRT, and SRS. The physicist collaborates with department staff and physics colleagues to evaluate, commission, and implement new technologies. The physicist ensures all radiation safety standards and regulatory requirements are met, and maintains a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors. The physicist applies independent judgement and learned methodologies while operating within established policies and procedures. The physicist assists in staff continuing education and physics resident training. The physicist consistently demonstrates Banner core values:

Located near Phoenix in Gilbert, Ariz., Banner Gateway Medical Center offers 286 private rooms, 13 operating suites, a 46-bed emergency department and shares a campus with the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center. Our WIS and NICU services support an average of 4,000 deliveries per year. Key specialties include oncology, obstetrics, bariatric surgery, emergency and other services that focus on meeting the changing needs of the dynamic and growing community we serve.

     

    Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Located in Gilbert, Ariz. (the Phoenix Metro area) on the Banner Gateway Campus, the center provides world-class care for oncology patients - both inpatient and outpatient - and has also brought leading oncology programs to the Banner Gateway campus including designation as a Stem Cell Transplant Center of Excellence and comprehensive Head & Neck cancer care. Our capabilities include five linear accelerator vaults, a brachytherapy vault, an advanced diagnostic imaging suite with PET/CT scan, more than 70 infusion bays, a cryopreservation lab and much more. Our inpatient medical oncology unit also incorporates a program that utilizes the electronic surveillance partnership in caring for the patient, where remote nurses have the ability to interact with patients via two-way audio-video to assist the bedside nurse with patient care.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    This position provides physics services by following department/facility policies, procedures and protocols. This position ensures optimal care/treatment to patient population.

    CORE FUNCTIONS

    1. Verifies proper operation and safety of all machines and sources producing radiation in accordance with established guidelines and protocols.

    2. Performs measurements or other evaluations as necessary to ensure accurate dose delivery for treatments. Uses independent judgment and applies learned methodologies according to established policy and procedures.

    3. Provides support and assistance in delivery of all radiation therapy treatments, including advanced specialized therapies. Assists in or performs computer treatment planning as needed. Assists in the evaluation and implementation of new therapies and protocols. Serves as a physics services resource for all staff.

    4. Assists in staff continuing education on appropriate medical physics and radiation safety procedures as needed. Demonstrates professional behavior/conduct in all interactions; fosters teamwork, efficient use of resources and quality patient outcomes.

    5. Maintains a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors. Ensures all radiation safety standards and regulatory requirements are met.

    6. Participates in regular quality assurance reviews. Ensures proper documentation is recorded and maintained.

    7. Accountable for the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities related to the Medical Physics practice. This includes maintaining confidentiality of all work information.

    8. Assures the efficient operation of workflow of the department by performing other duties as assigned. May hire, train, conduct performance reviews, and direct the workflow for the department staff.

    9. Independently performs procedures in accordance with department/facility policies, procedures and protocols to patients. Internal customers: All levels of radiation oncology and nursing management and staff, medical staff, and all other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. External Customers: regulatory and health agencies, patients and family members.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Masters Degree or PH.D. in Medical Physics or other related discipline is required.

     

    Current certification from the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics and licensure by the state of practice where required. Experience with procedures in the specific department required. BLS certification.

     

    Must possess knowledge in medical physics including regulations governing the use of radiation in medicine, advanced computer skills, advanced treatment planning, and quality control procedures. Must demonstrate effective communication skills, human relations skills, analyze data and solve problems.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
