Avondale Global Gateway is a 254-acre former shipyard on Mile 108 of the Mississippi River, redeveloped into a multimodal logistics terminal with significant warehousing and storage capabilities. T. Parker Host acquired Avondale in 2018 from Huntington Ingalls Industries and has since reestablished its iconic prominence into a model of ingenuity. Avondale Global Gateway is a historic property with four docks and over one mile of waterfront, uniquely accommodating ships, barges, rail and trucks. This facility offers immediate access to the regional and interstate highway system and is positioned at the interchange of six Class I railroads, creating the ability for cargo to be distributed in all directions.

Position Summary: The Health, Safety and Environmental (SHE) Specialist is responsible for supporting a culture of safety and regulatory compliance at the marine terminal. This position ensures that safety, health, and environmental standards are effectively implemented and maintained through regular inspections, training, and incident management. The SHE Specialist works closely with employees, supervisors, contractors, and regulatory agencies to promote safe operations and protect people, property, and the environment.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Safety Compliance & Field Presence
+ Conduct daily safety field rounds and inspections to ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA, USCG, and other applicable regulations.
+ Perform weekly terminal inspections to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and improvement opportunities.
+ Support spill prevention and control measures through weekly Spill Control Response Plan inspections.
+ Equipment & Safety Systems
+ Conduct monthly fire extinguisher inspections across terminal facilities.
+ Perform monthly first aid kit inspections and ensure proper stocking and readiness.
+ Training & Communication
+ Organize and facilitate safety committee meetings, documenting findings and corrective actions.
+ Oversee and/or conduct bi-monthly safety training sessions for employees and contractors.
+ Deliver new hire safety orientations to ensure awareness of terminal hazards, policies, and expectations.
+ Incident & Risk Management
+ Respond to incidents and near misses, coordinating immediate corrective actions.
+ Lead or support incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action tracking.
+ Assist with the issuance and compliance of work permits (e.g., hot work, confined space entry, line breaking).
+ Regulatory & Program Support
+ Maintain documentation of inspections, audits, and training.
+ Support compliance with OSHA, EPA, USCG, and state/local environmental and safety regulations.
+ Assist with implementation and continuous improvement of safety and environmental management programs.
+ Other Duties
+ Perform other duties as assigned by the Safety Director to support terminal operations and corporate SHE initiatives.
Qualifications & Requirements
+ High School diploma required; Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related field preferred
+ Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) required
+ 2–5 years of safety, health, or environmental experience in industrial, marine, or terminal operations preferred
+ Strong administrative, organizational, and mathematical skills
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
+ In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and USCG regulations
+ Skilled in incident investigation, root cause analysis, hazard identification, and recommending corrective actions
+ Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal abilities
+ Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet conflicting deadlines
+ Strong customer service mindset with a proactive, “I CAN DO” attitude
+ Adaptable to both indoor and outdoor work environments; collaborative team player
Physical Requirements:
+ Must meet “fit for duty” requirements upon job offer (pre-employment physical and drug test)
+ The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces
+ Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, wind, heat, etc.)
+ Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
+ Able to work extended shifts up to 12 hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with flexibility to respond to emergencies or after-hours incidents as needed
+ Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
