    Wesleyan University is a diverse, energetic liberal arts community located in Middletown, Connecticut. The student body consists of approximately 3,000 undergraduate and 200 graduate students.

     

    The Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science Programs are U.S Department of Education funded programs, through which local high school students are supported. The grants held by Wesleyan University serve Maloney HS in Meriden, Platt HS in Meriden, and Middletown HS in Middletown, CT.Reporting to the Program Director of Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science, the Program Coordinator will work in furthering pre-college access and program goals to assist eligible low-income, first-generation college bound participants to succeed academically and to prepare for college. The Program Coordinator will work directly with program participants throughout the school year and during the summer program.

    Responsibilities include:

    + Develop, coordinate, and implement programming to achieve standardized program objectives and meet student academic, social and personal needs.

    + Advise students, in individual and group settings, on college and career readiness.

    + Lead workshops and teach classes as necessary on academic, social, and personal skill building, including but not limited to college preparatory and senior seminar classes during the summer program.

    + Work closely with the target school’s administrators to identify and recruit eligible students and guide them through the application process.

    + Interview eligible students and their parents/guardians to ensure commitment to program.

    + Supervise and evaluate academic progress of participants.

    + Counsel, advise and assist program seniors and their parents/guardians on all aspects of college and financial aid application process.

    + Develop and maintain effective and productive relationships with participants and their parents/guardians.

    + Recruit, interview, train and supervise student tutor-mentors as necessary.

    + Train, mentor, and evaluate part-time employees including summer facilitators.

    + Assists Program Director in completing reporting to U.S Department of Education and community stakeholders.

    + Act as a liaison between the program, target high schools, and local communities.

    + Chaperone students during after-school tutoring, Saturday Sessions, field trips and special events.

    + Document services provided to students in line with department requirements.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    + Bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ experience working with educational programs in a school, community organization or higher education environment with students from disadvantaged backgrounds, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    + Proven knowledge about college access issues low-income and first-generation students face.

    + Proven knowledge of college and financial aid application process.

    + Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to effectively manage projects from beginning to end.

    + Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    + Demonstrated ability to succeed in a team-oriented environment.

    + Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

    + Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel regularly and consistently to target high schools.

    + Ability to work some weekends, evenings, overnights, and holidays throughout the year based on program needs.

    + Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Knowledge of a second language.

    + Exposure to TRIO or educational opportunity programs.

    + Knowledge of Google Suite/Google Workspace
