Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the supervision of a certified member of the doula team, the Doula Intern provides supportive care for patients within the scope of practice as defined by their training agency, in collaboration with the physician and other members of the health care team using recognized doula support techniques and hospital-based clinical and administrative policies. Doula care supplements the care given by medical providers. Doulas do not provide nursing care.
What will you do in this role:
Antepartum and Intrapartum
Provides the laboring woman help and advice on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, massage, movement and positioning.
Stays with the woman throughout labor giving reassurance and encouragement.
Facilitates communication and a cooperative relationship between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers.
Offers help and encouragement to the woman’s partner to help if he or she wants to play an active support role.
Post Partum
Has knowledge of lactation and how to assist and support the mother with breast feeding
Support the mother and family with integration of the newborn into the family
Provide the mother with education to prepare for discharge as a member of the Family Care Services team.
What qualifications you will need:
+ Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date
+ High School Graduate / GED
+ Completed doula training course.
+ It is the expectation that Doula certification will occur within 2 months of the doula intern’s completion of their certifying births. At the time of doula certification, the Doula Intern may apply for a “Certified Doula” position.
+ NRP certification within 1st year from beginning of employment
