    Position Information

    We are seeking an Assistant Vice Chancellor of Federal Relations to provide overall leadership, coordination and implementation responsibility for Texas A&M AgriLife agencies and interests with the Executive Branch, Congress, and stakeholder organizations. As a member of the A&M System Office of Government Relations, the occupant will support legislative and appropriations priorities and advance System-level policy objectives at the federal level. The occupant will work as a member of the A&M System Federal Relations team, with daily supervision and coordination provided by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Federal Relations and director of the Washington office.

    Responsibilities:

    + Represent the A&M System, and the components of Texas A&M AgriLife; Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M Forest Services, Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, before Congress, the Executive Branch and stakeholder organizations on research, education, service and policy issues impacting Texas A&M AgriLife. Advise the administration and faculty on these areas. In addition, the incumbent may, as needed and appropriate, provide similar support to other members of the A&M System that have related programmatic priorities.

    + Engages Federal administration through agencies and engages Congress via committees on issues impacting national agricultural policies, research, extension funding, and international agricultural development. Engage on issues related to federal policy affecting the academic research spectrum, focusing on agriculture and life sciences, and work to position Texas A&M AgriLife and the System with the Texas delegation for increased federal support for research.

    + Facilitate meetings with members of Congress and their staff, committee staff, and Federal agencies on programmatic efforts of TAMUS members. Organize visits by members and staff to System locations and briefs members about fiscal impacts of bills

    + Conducts public relations and community outreach activities in consultation with the Office of the Chancellor and System Government Relations.

    + Advocates for the inclusion of appropriate language in Federal legislation, and analyzes and interprets the implications of Federal legislation. Assists with the preparation of required Federal reports on related activities of TAMUS members and employees in Congressional hearings and on agency committees.

    + Engages industries, Universities, and associations that are involved in agricultural and natural resource policy development and advocacy.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Eight years of related experience in government relations.

    + Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

    + Knowledge of the Federal legislative process.

    + Knowledge of the State and Federal political landscape, legislative rules and procedures of the U.S. House and Senate, public relations, and the media.

    + Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

    + Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    + Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills. Excellent customer service, public relations, and problem-solving skills

    Salary: Compensation for this position is commensurate based on the selected candidate’s qualifications.

     

    Work Location/Travel: This position is located in Washington, D.C. and will require travel and work outside of normal business hours.
