Definition
Under general supervision, is responsible for auditing income tax returns for businesses and individuals to ensure compliance with City income tax provisions; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work

+ Audits financial records of businesses and persons subject to City income tax to determine taxable income and income tax liabilities on salaries and wages paid employees subject to income tax withholding provisions;
+ Reviews data concerning requests for refunds to determine the factual and mathematical basis for the claims and responds by approving, disapproving, or adjusting the payments;
+ Reviews employer records to determine liabilities, confirm adjustments, or verify refunds;
+ Identifies delinquent accounts and takes the necessary actions to notify individuals and businesses; establishes payment plans for individuals and businesses with unpaid tax liabilities;
+ Contacts individuals, tax consultants, business representatives, accountants, and others to clarify or correct inconsistencies found on tax returns, financial records, and other necessary forms;
+ Assists taxpayers in the preparation of income tax returns; answers questions and assists taxpayers with electronic tax system transactions;
+ Processes payments made by taxpayers, appropriately applying payments received to taxpayer account liabilities;
+ Uses computer software to perform auditing duties;
+ May attend pre-construction meetings to advise contractors on compliance with City tax requirements;
+ May assist Auditor II’s with conducting field audits to research businesses and locations which have not filed income tax returns and to investigate employer withholding compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a bachelor's degree.
Some positions may require the possession of a valid driver’s license

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and willreplacethe names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439.
The examination process will consist of a written work sample test weighted 20% covering filling out a tax form (City of Columbus IR-25); and a computerized examination weighted 80% covering Customer Service, Reading Comprehension, English Usage, Grammar, Spelling, Logic and Reasoning, Mathematics, and 2016/2019 Microsoft Excel and Word.
Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
