Position Overview: The Phlebotomy Technician is responsible for specimen collection and/or processing of all laboratory orders for patients in the Granville Health System. The Phlebotomy Technician works closely with the Laboratory Technicians/Technologists and other departments to ensure that the proper samples are collected for each patient, delivering excellent patient service and strengthening the relationship between the patient, the laboratory, and the organization.
Position Highlights:
+ Starting Rate: $14 + per hour (commensurate with experience and certification)

Key Responsibilities:
• Demonstrates required dexterity, knowledge, and skills (including strong written and verbal communication skills) necessary to perform as an independent/team member of the Granville Health System Laboratory; understanding variations in care for all age groups and complying with regulatory, safety, and infection control requirements, as well as GHS policies and procedures.
• Follows laboratory policies and procedures for: patient registration, order entry, specimen collection, handling, and processing for all laboratory testing (in-patients, out-patients, and patients at satellite facilities); performing venipuncture, capillary collection (finger and heel), urine collection, DOT drug screen collections, breath alcohol testing under DOT regulations, non-DOT drug screen collections, and upper-respiratory swab collection, using appropriate collection techniques.
• Maintains the workflow and communicates efficiently by answering telephones, taking messages, and forwarding information or calls to appropriate staff. Phone calls are acted upon promptly and handled in a professional manner with the highest level of customer service; promoting teamwork within the laboratory and with other departments, physicians, patients, and patient family members.
• Adheres to the GHS Laboratory’s Quality Assurance procedures for continuing education, and GHS mandatory online education; as well as identification, documentation, and troubleshooting of pre-analytical problems that may affect patient results.
• Stocks and monitors laboratory supplies inventory in the lab and at satellite facilities, and notifies supervisors when supplies become low.
• Ensures that all laboratory processes comply with CAP guidelines, participates in laboratory inspections as needed, and makes recommendations for quality improvement as appropriate.
• Utilizes required computer programs, software, and laboratory information systems; ensuring patient confidentiality is maintained in compliance with HIPAA at all times.
• Participates in the training of students, new hires, and other employees.
• Assists in monitoring workflow and staffing levels; and notifies supervisors/Administrative Laboratory Director of staffing problems to ensure adequate staffing for the laboratory; accommodating patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
Qualifications
High School graduation or equivalent.
Customer Service Skills
Clerical skills
Current NC driver’s license
Computer skills, medical terminology, administrative skills, and experience in hospital environment is preferred.
