    The Role

     

    Radiological Control Technicians (Monitors) perform surveillance of radiological work areas to detect and document the level and type of ionizing radiation/radioactivity in accordance with radiological control regulations. Performs and documents air, water, solid and surface radioactivity/radiation surveys using instruments designed to detect type and level of activity. Monitors also determine usage and maintenance of nuclear containment apparatus and respond to radiological incidents to ensure employee and environmental safety. Work is performed in the shipbuilding construction environment involving exposure to outside temperatures (both summer and winter), confined spaces, and elevated work areas. In addition, crawling, lifting, climbing vertical ladders and wearing respiratory equipment will be expected.

     

    Must Have

     

    Monitors must also possess the flexibility to work rotating shifts. The Monitor Trainee candidate must attend and meet the requirements of the Radiological Control Technician Qualification School (RCTQS), a 22 week course of intensive academic and practical training, located at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. Successful completion of RCTQS is required for continued employment. Prior to reporting to the school, the candidate will be refreshed and tested in basic math and science skills. While attending school, the candidate will be taught the basic knowledge and use of nuclear instrumentation, as well as, other aspects of the nuclear field. Candidates will be required to successfully complete written, practical, and oral examinations. Upon successful completion of all requirements the candidate will become a fully qualified Monitor.This position requires a high school graduate or equivalent. The candidate should be able to apply knowledge of algebraic and geometric calculation and should have basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. Prior to employment the candidate must be able to pass a complete physical examination. Be able to acquire an interim confidential security clearance. This clearance is a precursor to a Department of Defense confidential security clearance.
