Job Description
The part time ICART Lab Assistant supports faculty and students during hands on laboratory activities. The role combines student coaching, lab preparation/assessment, equipment upkeep, and safety oversight so learners can successfully complete labs. The Lab Assistant works independently during open lab times and collaboratively with faculty to ensure a safe, organized, and industry relevant learning environment.
Primary assignment at the Keokuk campus (Industrial Technology Building) assisting with evening courses. Duties may include occasional support at other SCC locations or off campus sites as program needs dictate.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
+ Student Support: Provide hands‑on assistance and troubleshooting so students can safely and successfully complete ICART lab assignments and meet course learning outcomes.
+ Lab Preparation & Assessment: Stage, set up, and reset lab stations; assist with preparing, administering, and scoring lab assessments/check‑offs; maintain a clean, organized, and safe lab environment.
+ Equipment Care: Perform routine maintenance and light repairs on training equipment; document issues and coordinate service needs with faculty as directed.
+ Inventory & Procurement: Track consumables and spares and recommend reorders; assist with assembling, and commissioning new equipment.
+ Assessment Support: Support faculty with lab check‑offs and assessment logistics; document results per course procedures.
+ Communication: Maintain regular communication with ICART faculty regarding student progress, equipment status, and lab scheduling/readiness.
+ Compliance: Maintain confidentiality of student information ( FERPA ); comply with SCC and departmental policies and procedures; demonstrate regular and punctual attendance.
+ Other duties as assigned.
This position has approximate evening work hours from 3:00 or 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm during fall and spring class dates.
The hourly pay rate for the position is $40.00 per hour.
Required Qualifications
Educational and Other Qualifications:
Associate’s degree ( AAS ) or higher in industrial maintenance, mechatronics, electrical/controls, robotics, or a closely related field. Demonstrated proficiency in AC/DC electricity, schematic reading, panel wiring, basic mechanical/pneumatic systems, and safe use of hand/power tools and test equipment (e.g., DMM , oscilloscope). Ability to model professional conduct and safety practices in a student lab; communicate clearly; walk the lab and stand for extended periods; and occasionally lift 40–50 lbs.
Experience:
At least three years of recent, relevant experience (within the past five years) in industrial automation/controls or industrial maintenance. Preferred experience with PLC / HMI platforms (e.g., Allen‑Bradley/Studio 5000), VFD /servo drives, industrial sensors, instrumentation/process control, panel building, and industrial networking (e.g., EtherNet/IP). Prior mentoring, tutoring, or technical lab‑support experience in an academic or training environment is strongly preferred.
