Position Details
General Statement
Graduate Assistant Resident Directors (GARDs) are members of the Residential Education staff at Montana State University-Northern. The GARD position assists in the leadership and overall management of a residential area located on campus. GARDs are part-time professional staff members enrolled in a full-time graduate program with in the Montana State University system. GARDs will be tasked with creating a responsible, inclusive communities by providing intentional programming, personal and academic support to students, and leadership development opportunities, and through their efforts to ensure a safe, comfortable living and learning environment. GARDs work to foster connections that create meaningful learning experiences for students, in and outside of the classroom. GARDs are expected to model MSU -Northern’s commitment to a responsible, caring, and inclusive student residential community.
As a live-in position, GARDs will need to be accessible to students, staff and faculty, and the campus community. GARDs will also need to be visible within their living community and on campus, in general. Additionally, as members of the Residential Education and larger Division of Student Affairs teams at Northern, each GARD will be assigned an area of focus in one of three areas: student activities, residential education, or student wellness. GARD roles are 10-month, live-in positions, serving 19 hours per week, August through May. Ten weekly hours will be devoted to Residential Education and ten weekly hours will be devoted to the assigned area of focus.
Compensation
An apartment with paid utilities, including wireless internet, a meal plan for Fall and Spring terms, graduate student tuition at a Montana State University system institution, and a stipend of $8,000 during the academic year that is distributed in equal installments following the biweekly payroll schedule.
Duties and Responsibilities
Key duties including but are not limited to the following:
Primary Responsibilities
+ Assist the Dean of Students in developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive Residential Education program
+ Manage daily operations of a designated residential community (residence hall or apartment complex)
+ Guide, support, and meet student needs through residential education
+ Supervise all student staff assigned to a residential community
+ Serve as primary student conduct and crisis management staff within student housing;
+ Participate in a regular on-call rotation
+ Assess and respond to student needs
+ Ensure accurate occupancy reporting and administrative needs for the assigned residential community
+ Work with the custodial teams and student staff to ensure the upkeep and functionality of the residential community
+ Conduct Health and Wellness Inspections of each building in conjunction with residents of that community at least once per semester
Programming and Community Development
+ Cultivate a positive and engaging living environment that fosters a sense of belonging and promotes student learning
+ Assess program needs and develop new program initiatives
+ Create, implement, support, and evaluate campus-wide programming
+ Integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion principles into the development of programs, practices, and processes that support and meet the needs of systemically non-dominant students
+ Collaborate with internal and external community members.
Leadership
+ Provide assistance in leading, motivating, supervising, and evaluating student staff
+ Assist in the recruitment, training, and selection of the Resident Assistant staff
+ Serve as an advisor for specific clubs and organizations
+ Participate on committees as assigned by supervisor
Administrative
+ Understand and implement all administrative, emergency, and operational policies and procedures
+ Assist Residential Education in welcoming and orienting new residents to campus and the Residence Halls
+ Coordinate and oversee all opening and closing procedures with the Dean of Students
+ Assist Dean of Students to maintain that all residential communities have proper records of conditions, occupancy, and changes
+ Assist the Dean of Students and with any conduct concerns and ensure compliance that all policy standards are followed
+ Ensure that all paperwork regarding residential area is updated and returned in a timely manner
Residential Education
+ Create, implement, and evaluate campus-wide programming, collaborating with internal and external community memebers, focusing primarily on all Residential Education program initiatives
+ Encoureage Resident Assistants and residents to participate in campus programs
+ Lead the Residential Education staff and students in creating a Residence Hall Association and Student Family Association, which will aid in th program development and improvement to the community environment
+ Develop engaging marketing and communication materials that support and advertise programming
+ Assist in the recruitment, training and selection of the Resident Assistant staff
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
+ Enrollment in a graduate degree program at a Montana State University system institution
+ Strong oral and written communication
+ Strong attention to detail, interpersonal and organizational skills
+ Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
+ Ability to work with various forms of technology including social media
+ Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Previous experience or involvement in student leadership, student organizations, student affairs, or related services.
