    Description

    An Intern will work collaboratively with our teams to support a Burns & McDonnell Department, Global Practice or Regional Office. This position will provide support and assistance with requests in support of the business strategy. The Environmental Services group is responsible for the full life cycle of infrastructure development, from permitting new projects, to the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. They support a variety of clients including those in the transportation, manufacturing, industrial, oil and gas, chemical and utility spaces. They also work with municipal, state, and federal government clients.

     

    Specific assignments and project work vary depending on the market segments. Please see below for information on each market:

    Environmental Studies:

    As an Environmental Studies Intern, you’ll support the development of multi-disciplinary environmental analyses for infrastructure projects, with a focus on routing and siting studies. You’ll gather and interpret environmental and social data to help assess current conditions, identify potential impacts on protected resources and communities, and contribute to alternative analyses. Your work will play a key role in preparing comprehensive permitting applications and ensuring regulatory compliance. This hands-on experience will give you exposure to environmental planning, impact assessment, and sustainability practices, while collaborating with experts across disciplines to support responsible project development.

    Natural Resources:

    Our Environmental Interns are responsible for performing tasks requiring the application of standard environmental techniques and procedures. Responsibilities include assisting with desktop reviews, field studies, data analysis, GIS analysis, and preparation of environmental reports, permits and assessments. Interns will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety or projects including high-voltage electric transmission lines, power generation construction activities, renewable energy generation, pipeline construction, industrial, and transportation projects.

    Environmental & Regulatory Compliance:

    As an Environmental Construction Compliance Intern, daily tasks include fieldwork, data analysis, and technical support across projects in power generation, oil and gas, and renewable energy. Responsibilities involve assisting with environmental surveys, site investigations, soil sampling, and construction compliance audits to meet regulatory standards. The role also includes preparing and reviewing documentation such as SWPPPs, ESCs, and permitting applications. Interns support compliance by observing construction activities, contributing to erosion control, and using GIS tools to create maps and data visualizations. The position balances field monitoring with office-based reporting, focusing on compliance, permitting, and environmental protection.

     

    As an Environmental Industrial Compliance Intern, responsibilities include supporting compliance and assessment efforts across power generation, oil and gas, industrial operations, and water treatment projects. Tasks involve field surveys, site investigations, wastewater and soil sampling, and audits to ensure regulatory adherence. The role includes preparing reports and documents such as SPCC Plans, FRPs, RCRA waste documentation, and field study reports. Interns use GIS tools to create sensitivity maps, emergency response materials, and accurate project mapping. Daily work also involves observing and documenting compliance at industrial sites, supporting proactive and responsive environmental management. The position blends fieldwork, data analysis, and documentation to help maintain regulatory compliance and environmental stewardship.

     

    + Assist with tasks that may include filing, scanning, data entry, documentation, Power Point presentation.

    + Assist with responses to general questions.

    + Participate in continuous improvement efforts by collecting and analyzing data.

    + Present solutions to concerns.

    + Research solutions to project concerns; analyze and recommend solutions to problems.

    + Assist with ad hoc projects as assigned by managers.

    + Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

    + Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.

    + Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.

    + Performs other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    + Pursuit of Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Health & Safety, Wildlife Management, Biology or related degree from an accredited program.

    + Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

    + Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

    + Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    + Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

    + Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

    + Demonstrated leadership skills.

    + Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.

    + Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
