Performance Audit Intern
Summer 2026: June 1 - August 7
About Our Program
The Comptroller of the Treasury's Audit Internship Program is a 10-week paid educational and experiential learning opportunity that offers undergraduate students a chance to observe and actively participate in the office's audit operations. Interns will spend the summer building skills through their active audit experience, audit-specific training, and professional development training. Interns will also have opportunities to build relationships with each other through shared experiences, such as touring the State Capitol and the Tennessee State Museum.
The Performance Audit Intern will have the opportunity to actively participate in an audit of a state government entity receiving public funds and will be part of an audit team that evaluates management’s mission and operational practices by conducting management interviews and reviewing management’s records and reports. Interns may also have the opportunity to evaluate the following: the design, implementation, and effectiveness of management’s internal controls; the efficiency and effectiveness of an entity's operations and systems; and compliance with laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements. At the end of the 10-week internship program, Performance Audit Interns will have gained experience in making government work better by determining whether the state entity met the mission and goals that it was created to accomplish.
Location
Performance audit internship opportunities are based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Depending on the audit assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel during the summer. Typical travel opportunities are in the Nashville area; however, some may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee.
