About the Position: Serves as a Supervisory Firefighter at Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Click here for more information on SRC for Firefighters (Secondary) Responsibilities Direct the HAZMAT Operations level firefighters in responding to first call on hazardous material spills. Direct and participates in fire prevention and protection, including inspection, responding to fire alarms and emergency calls in the protection of life and property. Inform higher level supervisor of need for additional personnel due to anticipated vacancies, increase in workload or other circumstances to obtain replacements or additional personnel. Advise employees of the performance requirements of their positions and keeps them informed individually of their progress in meeting the requirements. Plan work schedules and sequence of operations to assure an even flow and distribution of work, the expeditious handling of priority cases and the meeting of schedules and deadlines. Make recommendations concerning the maintenance or replacement of equipment and maintenance and safety of facilities. Direct routine inspection and prevention maintenance services on motorized firefighting apparatus and auxiliary pumping equipment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department brigade; 2) suppressing fires; 3) responding to Hazardous Material (HAZMAT), structural, and fire emergencies; 4) inspecting fire protection systems, fire detection systems, and fire safety equipment to ensure proper operation; 5) performing rescue operations; and 6) teaching to instruct firefighting personnel on methods and procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Fire Officer III; Fire Instructor II; Fire Inspector II; HAZMAT Technician; HAZMAT Incident Commander; AND Marine Shipboard Firefighting for Land Based Firefighters certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Hazardous Materials Response Managing Human Resources Preventative Maintenance Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09). Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required.
