The District Attorney’s Office seeks an Investigator to advance the mission of the DA’s Office. Investigators perform a variety of semi-complex and complex investigations of felony and misdemeanor crimes for the Office of the District Attorney. The Department has elected to consider a range of experience for this vacancy. A candidate’s qualifications will determine the level at which they are hired.

Investigator I: assists deputy district attorneys with follow up work and investigation of felony and misdemeanor cases filed by law enforcement agencies. Work consists of locating necessary witnesses and victims to serve subpoenas, interviewing witnesses, writing thorough reports, preparing and reviewing criminal histories, and other tasks as needed. Duties for an Investigator I also include transportation of witnesses, and personal security detail for District Attorney staff.

Investigator II: conducts pre and post-case filing investigations of complicated felony and misdemeanor cases on behalf of the District Attorney. Works collaboratively with deputy district attorney staff in follow-up work and investigation of cases, including interviewing witnesses, writing thorough reports, preparing warrants and productions of record, collecting and analyzing evidence, and filing criminal cases. Serves “on call” at assigned times to assist the office in after-hours tasks. Assists in the investigation of homicide and other complex or high-profile cases as assigned.

Salary Ranges:

Investigator I: $71,697.63 to $103,961.56 annually ($34.470 to $49.982 hourly)

Investigator II: $75,999.49 to $110,199.26 annually ($36.538 to $52.980 hourly)

To be successful, our candidate should have the following knowledge, skill, and abilities:

+ A commitment to working with integrity keeping our community safe and making our criminal justice system better.

+ Considerable knowledge of civil and criminal law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, statutes and ordinance applicable to the 17th Judicial District of Colorado.

+ Ability to perform all peace officer related duties;

+ Excellent oral communication skills for working collaboratively with supervisors, Deputy District Attorneys, colleagues and for interviewing witnesses

+ Outstanding writing skills for writing thorough, well-documented reports

+ Ability to act/react in stressful and/or threatening situations and ability to operate vehicles, equipment and firearms utilized in investigative work.

+ Ability to conduct complicated investigations of felony and misdemeanor crimes under general supervisions

+ Ability to conduct interviews of victims and witnesses to crime;

+ Ability to research, categorize and analyze considerable amounts of data as required;

+ Ability to prepare, write and complete accurate reports.

+ Ability to be flexible to meet the demands and needs of the position.

+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, attorneys, suspects, witnesses, other police agencies, personnel and the general public

+ Physical Demands - Employees are required to

+ Ability to carry a firearm and qualify with the firearm on a quarterly basis

+ Ability to sit for extended periods of time

+ Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs while maintaining proper balance

+ Ability to see near (2') and far (20') with or without the use of prescription eyewear

+ Capable of wearing personal protective equipment to include eye and ear protection

Work Environment – Employees may be exposed to or come in contact with:

Examples of Duties for Success

+ Ability to perform duties of a peace officer; ability to act/react in stressful and/or threatening situations; ability to control unruly and resistive individuals; ability to operate vehicles, firearms, and other issued equipment during investigative procedures.

+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, fellow workers, attorneys, court officials, witnesses, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public.

+ Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to utilize effective interpersonal skills.

+ Proficiency with computer software programs and search engines

+ Ability to tolerate exposure to the elements; ability to climb, stoop, crouch, kneel, and stay on feet for extended periods of time; ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; ability to operate office and investigative equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, FAX machines, still and video cameras and audio/visual recording equipment.

+ May travel throughout the metro area to serve personal legal process such as subpoenas or other legal notices to witnesses & defendants of cases handled by the District Attorney. Further duties include establishing, as necessary, the location of persons to be served through standardized procedures (e.g. publicly accessible databases, as well as private resources available only to law enforcement).

Qualifications for Success

+ Minimum 2 years of previous law enforcement experience, must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License, Certification as a Colorado Peace Officer and minimally qualified as a marksman to established unit standards.

+ State law requires a physical examination and a psychological evaluation of an applicant be completed before an applicant may be appointed

+ Excellent writing and oral communication skills.

+ Preference for ability to read, write, and speak Spanish.

+ Preference for previous law enforcement experience as an investigator/detective
