PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Senior Manager Major Claims Unit (MCU) leads a team of specialized complex claims professionals focused on managing and resolving catastrophic, high-dollar workers’ compensation injury claims. This role is responsible for driving claims closure initiatives, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing financial outcomes through expert oversight and innovative resolution strategies. This role directly contributes to enterprise risk reduction by ensuring timely resolution of high-cost claims and influencing best practices in litigation management. The Major Claims Unit works collaboratively with and receives support from dedicated in-house counsel for litigation strategy and nurse case managers for medical management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Claims Management
+ Manages all aspects of high exposure claims including coverage determinations, investigations, and resolution strategies which may include pursuit of risk transfer, extensive negotiations and complex litigation management.
+ Identifies and provides potential solutions for emerging exposures and claims trends.
+ Develops and implements strategic plans to accelerate closure of high-cost, long-duration claims.
+ Collaborates with legal, medical, and financial experts to evaluate exposure and resolution pathways.
+ Leverages predictive analytics and severity modeling tools to proactively identify claims requiring escalation, closure strategy shifts, or risk transfer.
+ Partners with Underwriting and Risk Management to inform account level-strategies and employer engagement.
Stakeholder Engagement
+ Presents high exposure claim strategies, trends, and outcomes to executive leadership and enterprise risk stakeholders.
+ Builds strong partnerships with panel defense counsel, and medical management vendors to drive optimal outcomes.
+ Acts as a critical Subject Matter Expert in high exposure claims reviews across all jurisdictions providing strategic insight and resolution recommendations.
+ Ensures compliance with state/local regulatory requirements by following company guidelines and staying current on insurance laws and regulations.
Operational Excellence
+ Ensures reserve accuracy to support appropriate financial forecasting, reinsurance reporting and risk scoring.
+ Oversees quality assurance processes and conducts regular audits of complex claims.
+ Utilizes data analytics to track performance metrics, analyzes operations/system issues, and drive decision-making.
Team Leadership
+ Coaches and mentors a team of MCU claims examiners to build judgment and capabilities to effective manager complex and catastrophic cases from early intervention to mitigate exposure to claims closure.
+ Provides guidance on claim strategy, litigation management, and settlement negotiations.
+ Drives a high-performing culture focused on engagement, accountability, development, and results.
+ Establishes and maintains overall work cadence, ensuring excellent performance and outcomes in delivery and customer service.
SUPERVISORY RESPONISBILITIES
Directly supervises a team of MCU claims examiners and fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; coaching, mentoring, and developing team members to further their skills and knowledge; creating and monitoring development plans; setting performance expectations and goals; forecasting staffing needs and planning for peak times frames and absences; enforcing department policies and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
+ Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent required) preferably in Business, Risk Management, or related. Master’s degree preferred.
+ Minimum 8-10 years of claim experience (Workers’ Compensation preferred), with a minimum of 3-5 years in a leadership role overseeing high exposure/loss sensitive accounts.
+ Minimum 3-5 years of experience managing claims professionals.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
+ Certification in Workers’ Compensation (e.g., CPCU, CWCP, WCCA/WCCP) preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
+ Experience working with claims analytics tools and dashboards (e.g., Tableau, PBI).
+ Experience presenting to executive leadership, including financial and strategic claim outcomes.
+ Proven track record of mentoring others.
+ Proficiency in claims management systems and data reporting tools.
+ Expertise in workers’ compensation coverage interpretation within complex and high exposure claim scenarios.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence cross functional teams and senior leadership.
+ Strategic thinker with a proven track record of proactive problem solving.
+ Strong knowledge of jurisdictional regulations, reserve practices and claim life cycle management.
+ Exceptional analytical, negotiation, and critical thinking skills.
+ Good working knowledge and familiarity with multi-jurisdictional claims management.
+ Ability to positively affect highest severity claims outcomes through investigation, negotiation and effectively leading litigation.
+ Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
+ Experience with multi-state claims handling and high severity claim strategy preferred.
+ Background in litigation management strategy and settlement negotiation preferred.
+ Leading through organizational change, including restructuring or transformation initiatives preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Office environment – no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands and employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear. The employee may need to sit in front of a computer for a period. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally need to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may need to lift and/or move up to twenty-five pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates in an office environment and requires the frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier, and other standard office equipment.

The current range for this position is
$119,748.71 - $201,947.98
This range is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses. If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors unique to each candidate, including experience, education and the location of the role and considers employees performing substantially similar work.
